Hey friend.

I get that too....sometimes my heart beats fast and it just feels really unnatural. [Frown] I have gotten really spazzy from it too. I think it's just part of the package right now. Maybe later you'll be able to tolerate it better!!!

I think most of us are sensitive to caffeine. I know I am!

Depending on how well a person tolerates caffeine,

this can happen to anyone, whether or not they have

Lyme disease. Caffeine is a stimulant, which puts

the body into a state of arousal. That state of

arousal can cause anxiety for many people. If I

drink too much coffee or have too many energy

drinks in a day, I become a nervous wreck.

However, I do tolerate caffeine pretty well. I

know many people who can't drink coffee because it

makes them panicky.

probably a dumb move on my part....

JUst trying to be normal again as I get to feeling better.

Makes me feel like i'm about to have a heart attack and real antsy. I wish I knew the medical or scientific reason for this. why caffeine or coffee gets the lyme going so bad

Hi Clint

I quit drinking coffee several years ago -

I used to drink about 5 small cups aday at work-
on weekends I would get Killer migraine headaches-

I finally figured out that is was caffeine
withdraws because I would not drink any coffee
on the week ends --

Now I drink Green tea - Much better--Jay--

clint,

It may not necessarily be that caffeine is causing

the Lyme to worsen. Have you gone a significant

amount of time without ingesting much caffeine? If

that's the case, a regular-size cup of coffee

could easily cause the physical sensations you're

experiencing. People develop a tolerance to

caffeine as with other substances. Say you

were a regular coffee drinker, consumed about 3

cups a day, and then cut caffeine out of your diet

for 6 months; after 6 months of ingesting no

caffeine at all, you could not go back to drinking

3 cups a day. Your tolerance would have decreased

so that it would be as though you had never had a

cup of coffee before. Therefore, this cup of

coffee you had was a huge shock to your system.

Stimulants cause muscle tension, which may cause

pain. It may cause headaches, migraines, etc. Any

type of pain that is worsened by tension can be

triggered by caffeine. Rapid heartbeat is also

a common side-effect of caffeine. A small sip or

two of coffee may be enough of a lift for you

right now -- maybe a cup of decaf would be

sufficient. Take care of yourself.

My guess would be that it doesn't affect the Lyme directly, but rather that the Lyme is impacting some system of your body, like your heart, or your blood pressure, or how your liver processes things..... and thus making the way you feel when you consume caffeine different than how it would feel if your body wasn't affected by the Lyme.

Does that make sense? I don't think it's causing the Lyme to be more "active," just that your body responds differently to things right now because of the Lyme or the recovery process.

That is my guess!!! I have noticed sometimes for me it's worse than others. For me it is more just random luck on whether it affects me strangely or not; it doesn't seem to correlate with when I am more symptomatic.

Hope that makes sense....... maybe just lay off it for awhile and try again later. It's probably just not the best thing for you right now. I understand about wanting to feel normal though! At least it's better than alcohol...I feel like alcohol actually DOES make the Lyme more active!

Did you drink the coffee black ? No sugar and milk.

Or was it one of the other kinds that may have had extra sugar/artificial sweetners in it?

I have been drinking regular coffee for years, black, and never had the problems others have with it.

Keep in mind we are all different.

Clint31,

Some of you guys will go to extreme measures to avoid giving up your coffee, yah? The more coffee you drink, the more your body will tolerate? Same thing with alcohol, but you end up dead from alcohol toxicity. Cigarettes too.

I know, I know, I had the coffee addiction too but it flared up my joints which is my lyme symptom.

Here is an alternate suggestion. Teeccino Tea. It brews like coffee and I add the cream and sugar just like coffee. I get the hazelnut flavor and just love it.

Better still, it is naturally decaffienated AND alkaline. In other words, good for you.

I have 2 cups every morning and do not miss the coffee at all.

www.teeccino.com

Hope this helps you wean away from coffee.

Since I got sick many years ago I cannot support coffee or black tea (or coke) anymore. Recently I had some tests done about how my body can detox.

It was found that some isoenzymes of the p450 system (which form so-called "CYP-families") don't work in my case. It's the CYP1A2 which is responsible for detoxing caffeine and this special one is not working in my detox system.

It is said that infections can interrupt this system.
