I believe my husband may have Lyme. Can anyone tell me if they have heard of a rash that pretty much covers the whole body occuring after an initial round rash presentation? Also has anyone every had very high fevers during the first month of Lyme. My husband's fevers routinely run between 103-104. He has been on doxy for 12 days but the fevers remain high still the majority of the time and have worsened recently. Also the rash had gone away but is now even worse than the whole body rash had been initially.
His doc wants to take him off the doxy, but I am concerned. Lyme has not been confirmed yet but I believe it could still be possible. Anybody have any thoughts on any of this. Thank you for your help.

The only time I had an almost whole body rash, it was Babesia related. I think Babesia can also cause fever, but I didn't have that myself.

It sounds like you need emergency help AND a doctor familiar with ALL the tick-borne infections - and others that should be ruled out such as mosquito borne-illness.

www.igenex.com for testing of other TBD.

BTW, doxy cause me to have a rash all over. I can't take it anymore. Actually, I get 8-13 round rashes all over - in exactly the same place each time. the itch, the heat, the pain is unbearable.

If your doctor wants to take him off doxy, the WHAT will be the next plan? Nothing is not a plan, as I can hear in your voice.

You might post in the "seeking doctors'" forum and check out the local support groups for suggestions. See menu to the left on this page for support groups.

Best of luck to you.

make sure to take a picture of the rash
put a coin in the picture to show size -
get close up pictures-

How long ago did you see round rash?
take a picture of it too if possible-

What is the Doxi dose ?
He could be having a reaction to the doxi-

Early in lyme infection it is normal to have
a fever --Jay-

Yes, it is possible with lyme and tick borne coinfections to have a very high fever within one month of a tick bite. I did, and also had meningitis within one month of a tick bite. I also had co-infections with lyme disease from a tick bite.

Same with the rash; the bulls-eye rash can rapidly expand until it covers the whole body.

You need to find a lyme literate doctor as soon as possible to see your husband. Please go to the seeking a doctor section and post there. Most doctors are not informed adequately about tick-borne diseases and do not understand proper treatment.

Hope he feels better soon.

Erlichia is the tick coinfection that tends to run the high fever- of course Lyme can do that too.....Doxy is the drug of choice for that coinfection. But make sure your husband is getting an adequate dose- at least 200mg 2 a day. In hard cases 100mg won't do much.

Find a good LLMD and also question your own doc. Try to run all Lyme tests on him through Igenex Western Blot and also all coinfection tests- Babesia, Bartonella (can cause red spots all over), Mycoplasma, Erlichia, etc. Try MDL labs also. Make your doc order these test kits and have the blood sent out to California and NJ.

Make sure he stays on an antibiotic until all tests are confirmed and symptoms die down.

Please take your husband to the ER now and tell them he was bitten by a tick. You've described Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Edited to add:

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/rmsf/Signs.htm

Print the page at the link and take it with you. The relevant part is:

The classic triad of findings for this disease are fever, rash, and history of tick bite.

My husband is doing a little better actually. The rash has faded. Fever is coming down to where it just reaches 100-101 once a day. After 4 weeks of either a rash or fever we are relieved.

He is off all his meds as they ran out and after calls to 3 different doctors I can't get any of them to continue him on one more course of doxy.

We did call today to get an appt. with one of the recommended LLMD's in our area but that won't be until late Sept. unfortunately.

That's great that he is better, but I'm very worried about him.

Google RMSF!!!

Here is one result:

They tested him for all the tick-borne illnesses including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but all came back OK when he was tested 2 weeks into his illness.

So I don't know. I guess it is just a waiting game now....

Could have been too early for anything to show up on the testing. Happens all the time. They are playing with his life.

Also, the labs they use are not the best for tick-borne illnesses.

Please find an LLMD for him ASAP.. make an appointment now. It often takes several weeks or months to get in.... so call now!

From the link above:

"Rocky Mountain spotted fever remains a serious and potentially life-threatening infectious disease today. Despite the availability of effective treatment and advances in medical care, approximately 3% to 5% of individuals who become ill with Rocky Mountain spotted fever still die from the infection."
