Hello:

Trying to make sense of my suddenly increased neuropathy symptoms? It was so horrible last night, everything touching my legs/chest/arms caused constant stinging and burning - on top of that, unrelenting insomnia.

Quick background: Have Lyme and Bart Dx and currently taking Bart tx (Rifamin and Biaxin XL). Usually just have the neuropathy (burning) in my feet and palms, but what could cause it to spread so fast?

Only changes I've made (apart from several nights of very poor sleep) is to take 5MG sublingual B12 and acitvated charcoal. Is there ANY chance either of these supplements could make nerve pain worse? Could it just be die-off from the ABX? Have only been on them 1 week...NEVER had any of these increase problems on IV Rocephin for Lyme.

My hunch is maybe the B12 stimulates the nerves causing increased pain? My neuropathy is only sensory and I've thought all along that only the 'small fiber nerves' are involved - hence could B12 excite these to the point of burning pain?

Even stranger, the Gabapentin is not even beginning to help, as where it usually does, except for the feet.

Absolutely miserable over this...if not for this sx, I'd consider myself a totally healthy, happy, 39 year old male, but this widespread burning is beyond any misery I've ever known.

Should I stop the B12 or charcoal? Can anyone relate?

With All My Best, MBB3 [confused]

My LLMD gave me the sublingual (sp) vit b-12 and I stopped taking it. It definitely didn't help and for a second I thought it made the stabbing burning pains in my neck worse.

Who knows?

Hi MBB3,

I have also had episodes when the burning, which is in my legs and arms, spread to my torso for a few days. When it happened my skin also became very sensitive as you describe, with clothes feeling like sand paper. We really do have the same thing going on...
It happened about 3-4 months ago when I was on moxifloxacin (new gen quinolone for bart), mino and malarone. I also had red streaks pop up on my back at the same time. I definitely attributed that one to a bart herx. Mind you, the neuropathy is still here but retracted back to my legs/arms and is of less intensity for now.
It should get better soon, let us know.

As you say, it is dubious whether b12 withh help with small fiber neuropathy since these are unmyelinated. Are you taking EPA/DHA from fish oils, NAC, ALA? If not, give them a try - pretty sure they are helping me.

Why me? Well, why not me???
