I had undiagnosed Lyme for 20+ years, and it was always relapsing/remitting.
Then I had two major surgeries within a two week period - and I have never been the same.
Within the first month, we knew I was not healing properly, and then slowly all the Lyme symptoms became more and more severe.
Took another 5 years to get diagnosed.

I had surgery to repair a severely broken ankle in March of 2006. My Lyme symptoms started in September of 2006. I often wondered if there was any connection with the two.

I've had Lyme "forever" but had a bad flare immediately following a hysterectomy. I was sick for the next 4 yrs, eventually ending my teaching career.
Guess what they put me on for an infection after the surgery??
FLAGYL. They nearly killed me with that stuff!!!
Since I didn't know I had Lyme, I had no clue I was herxing from here to Mars and back!

I had emergency appenditice in 2nd grade, had to have my toncils removed in 3rd grade due to chronic strep-I then developed eye issues and had eye surgery in 4th grade. My parents think I was bit when I was going into 7th grade. That's when my skin went from perfect to standford study and I started physical therapy for my ankles, knees, and rist (growing pains they told me).
I think I was bit with Lyme before 2nd grade. But who really knows. My point is I've had several surgeries pre-treatment.
In addition I have also had surgeries after diagnoises. Gallblatter and central port line.
Hope that helps

The reason I was asking about surgeries was because I had knee surgery a couple months before the lyme stuff started. Ive always wondered if the two werent related.
Originally I was wondering if the Bb got past the bbb via anesthesia. But it sounds like it can get by that anytime it wants. Now Im a bit more focused in thinking that it was probably already in me, but it "became active" after surgery because my immune system was so weak.
It just seems so coincidental that it happen to start up while recovering from surgery.
It would be interesting to hear of any correlations between supressed immune systems, and or surgery recovery, and the onslaught of the Bb becoming active...very similar to shingles.
Any thoughts?

My symptoms started getting worse after a complete hysterectomy, in which I almost died from blood loss. That was 1.5 years ago.
But I didn't get REALLY major symptoms until about February... right after having a very traumatic tooth extraction gone wrong. The root was ankyloosed (fused to my sinus bone) and snapped off during extraction, making a HUGE hole in my sinus. Anyways...it was devistating, lots of blood loss, stress, MAJOR pain.
Right after that was when I was sure I was dying from my symptoms.

Just as an fyi, if they used any steriods during or after the surgery (which they often use to reduce or maintain swelling) that can trigger the lyme back.
An overdose of pretnisone and cortizone combined for hives treatment is what gave me shingles, which gave me acne and had to be treated with accutane and pretnisone combined for 9 months which was basically the destruction of my health. I had no idea I had lyme.
As well, after my gallblatter surgery my babs was triggered which triggered my lyme. Again, I never tested positive for babs prior to surgery only bart on erchil.
They all play off eachother as I am realizing (2 years later) and I think as hard as it is for me to admit at 24-it's about maintaining a normal life not necessarily being cured.
I actually tore my acl in high school(before I was diagnoised with lyme) and they suggested surgery. Because I had so many surgeries as a child my parent opt NO..but now my LLMD is suggestioning I seriously consider it and wants me to see an orthapedise.
How did your surgery go? I have a lot of joint problems. I broke both my foot and collarbone (although my docs at the time said they weren't broken) we recently looked through the x-rays and turns out they were...
ne wayz-I am very nervous to have a knee replacement at 24..and with the current state of my health I am just so nervous to go under the knife for the 7th time.
Good luck Lindsay

Yes, My Surgery was Jan. 8, 2008 to remove a parathyroid tumor (caused by High D, caused by Lyme I now figure).
By mid-January I just did not feel right and kept gaining more negative symptoms. By Feb. I was living in our walk-in closet with hyper sensivity to light, hearing, and multiple chemical sensitivity so bad I would fall to my knees at smells.
My ears rang terribly loud. My brain actually shook at night.
After 5-6 weeks I dropped from 126 lbs to 114 lbs and thought I was headed to my maker.
March 3, I phoned Mom (Oregon) and she said "you only take one medicine - why not stop and see if it helps". I stopped taking Ambien. Within three days the full-body tingling, numb arms started to diminish.
Zolpedum / Ambian must work with the neurotransmitters, because I thought I was going to recover. No so. PS: I don't recommend this sleep aid with neuro-lyme.
Between Nov 2007 to May 10, 2008 I visited nine doctors - two MD's, two naturopaths, an internist, a thyroid surgeon, a chiropractor and an endocrinologist.
I saw the ninth doc in May. He's an MD, Naturopath, Homeopath, DDS and is LL. Before I was through telling him my symptoms he commented he thought he knew what the problem was. Two weeks later my results were all back:
CD57 = 39 Western Blot IgM = 5 bands Western Blot IgG = 3 bands Positive for HHV6, EBV, CMV Blood Panel = Thick 356 & 320 Vit D high at 70
You bet my surgery woke up spirochetes, and their nieces & nephews.
Hindsight - I had been growing anxious for two years and Sept 22, 2007 a case of hives resulted in an NP insisting I take a cortizone pill pack. I started to tingle w/in three days.
I have many more symptoms than listed above, but am not sure where the correct place is to post -- I am learning how to navigate this website. Yep - have read much of BettyG's data, but I don't always understand these days.
My take on it: Timing, sprio-load and a major stressor can bring on the Hounds of Baskerville.

Not me, but a friend of mine did, it was the "trigger" that started LD.
I may be wrong, but I believe after surgery it may be common to use corticosteroids and that alone can have a devastating trigger effect if true. I know several people with LD who have had surgery and made sure to tell the doctor's no corticosteroids are to be used at all!
Corticosteroids injections were my trigger, like a grenade.

Yes a chevron bunionectomy. Two days after the surgery I felt the bones in my foot doing an electrical buzzing. At the time I thought gee I am really in touch with my body...I can feel my bones healing.
Fast forward four years later and the same foot buzzes. Now I realize it was Bb buzzing and not miraculous healing.

Not all of those surgeries listed above are necessarily done under general anaesthesia, but I suspect that there are long term consequences to the use of that kind of anaesthesia gas; they have halogens that disrupt thyroid metabolism and they put stress on the liver as well.
