I was just at the Dr. office reading through the June/July 2008 copy of Outdoor Life and read an article about a new Lyme Vaccine. It sounded more like a treatment than a Vaccine though.
Its an injection of Doxy that has been modified to be released over 20 days. It has been 100% effective in Mice. It says in the article that oral treatment with Doxy is 20 to 30% effective in preventing the illness. It is being developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Fort Collins, CO. They are currently working on different delivery methods such as patches.
Anyone hear anything about this?

The concept of this as prophylaxis is utterly absurd; this term
denotes a protective measure to be taken before any
disease is present, and the only thing said treatment could be
used for
is dealing with an already-established infection. Additionally, I'm sure it's more or less
equivalent to the official "early-Lyme treatment" currently recommended by the IDSA
(which virtually never works in humans.)
It is nice that they're finally admitting that their
currently
recommended "prophylactic" treatment doesn't work, though. If this
doesn't
get at least someone ****ed I might actually be
surprised...
God--guess you have to be an encephalitis sufferer to have

Maybe I'm thinking abut this too simplistically, but they are willing to give long term antibiotics to people who DON'T have Lyme.
But they still refuse long term abx to people who DO have signs of chronic infection?
Maybe its a question of dosing, but still, WTF?
