Hi all,

For those of you on 600 mg Rifampin daily - do you take it as two 300mg caps at the same time each day, or do you take it morning and evening? My Rx is not clear on that.

I made a mistake with my Rifampin, and could use some thoughts on how to proceed. I hope this makes sense...

Started on Tues, with one 300 mg tablet twice a day. I misread my instructions and thought this was half the dose Rx'd. (I always start slowly due to a history of drug allergies)

Yesterday, Thurs, I took two 300 mgs tablets in the am, thinking that was my Rx'd dose, and realized my mistake that evening. My Rx is for 2 capsules each day. Having already taken 2 in the morning, I did not take more last night.

I think I was at a higher than Rx'd dose for one day only.

I'm kicking myself - I really can read. I've been in treatment for 3+ years and have rarely made these types of mistakes, if ever!

So here's my dilemma - my first instinct was to take a day off, but that's not a good idea with Rifampin. Having taken too much of it yesterday, though, I'm not sure how to proceed today.

What do you suggest? I would value any suggestions.

Thanks.

Hi,
I am not sure how you figure you took too much yesterday, although you should take 300mg twice per day, rather than 2 at the same time you still haven't "overtaken" since you did 600mg total yesterday.

I would start today as prescribed, one in the morning and one in the evening.

This medication has a short half life so it is in and out of the body fairly quickly. So yesterdays dose (even if you took both at the same time) is gone already.

Here is Rif info if interested, it looks lie 600mg last about 5-7 hours (1/2 life): http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/rifampin_cp.htm

Take care.

Hi Cactus!

I take 2 capsules once a day for a total of 600mg. That is what my LLMD said to do. You definitely do not want to skip any doses with Rifampin.

Generally in my experience (filling RX for animals) When it says take two capsules a day that means at the same time. With animals we actually write once or twice a day to limit confusion.

Thanks so much, both of you!

Lymebytes, I figured that since I took 1 cap in the evening, then 2 the following morning - that would be 3 caps separated by only 12 hours.

Wasn't sure if that was too much, too close together - and with the way I felt yesterday, maybe it was a bit much.

Or maybe it's just the lovely bart herx beginning, and it's time to buckle my seatbelt and hold on for the ride!

Thanks again,
Cactus

Cactus, Gotcha, now I understand. No...don't worry about.

I was prescribed this same med (although) haven't started - like you 1 in the morn 1 in the eve.

How do you feel so far...my sister loved Rif, my husband hated it. I am a big chicken... [Roll Eyes]

Take care.

I am a big chicken, too! ...and the orange pee is quite a shocker, so be prepared for that when you start!

It is somehow comforting to hear that your sister loved Rif - makes me feel more hopeful.

For now, I'm feeling the effects, and hoping they will pass quickly. I'm definitely herxing, and I'm pretty out of practice with handling this kind of herx. Ouch!

I guess everyone is different, but the Doxy/Rifampin combination I've been on for about 2 months now, hasn't improved my symptoms any better than the Doxy/Biaxin combination did for the 5 months prior. The symptoms haven't gotten any worse, but they haven't gotten any better either.

my llmd, a past pres, of ilads had prescribed 600mg the rifampin to be taken once a day & not to seperate.

Call you own LLMD to clarify and find out why it was prescribed the way it was.

Don't guess or have others guess for you. Play it safe & ask the MD.
