Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 1708 , the "Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education, and Research Act of 200 7 ." It is good to hear from you.
As the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the United States today, additional research and preventive measures are critical. If it is not diagnosed and treated early, Lyme disease can lead to chronic illness and can affect every system in the body, including the central nervous system. A study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reveals that patients with persistent Lyme disease suffer physical disability equivalent to that of congestive heart failure, severe pain equivalent to post-operative pain, and profound fatigue similar to multiple sclerosis.
S. 1708 was introduced on June 27 , 2007 , and would provide for the expansion of efforts for prevention, education, and research activities with respect to Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. It would also provide for the establishment of a Tick-Borne Diseases Advisory Committee. The bill emphasizes diagnostic testing, surveillance and reporting of all tick-borne diseases, prevention of tick-borne diseases, and increased clinical research.
I understand the importance of disease education and research. Be assured that as this legislation and related issues come before the Senate, I will work diligently with my colleagues to ensure that prevention, research, and education with respect to tick-borne disease are funded appropriately.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. In the meantime, if you would like to receive timely email alerts regarding the latest congressional actions and my weekly e-newsletter, please sign up via my website at www.chambliss.senate.gov .

Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 1708, the Lyme and Tick-borne Disease Prevention, Education, and Research Act of 2007. I appreciate your comments and am glad to have the opportunity to respond.
As a member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pension (HELP) Committee, I am committed to enhancing our nation's health care. I realize that proper funding is one of the keys to ensuring that we have an effective and efficient health care system. Keeping your concerns in mind, I will work to see that our nation's health care system and services receive the proper amount of funding as the Senate considers health care related budget items for fiscal year 2009.
S.1708 is a bill which requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish the Tick-Borne Diseases Advisory Committee. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. When S. 1708 comes before the full Senate for review I will be sure to remember your letter of support.
