A friend of mine who works for the State of Massachusetts as a forester told me last night that a beetle from China has been found in three states.

NY, MA and IL. The beetle is capable of destroying and entire forest.

Here is there plan. To spends millions of dollars if not more to find any tree infected, treat that tree and every tree with a square mile for 3 years. That's just the price in MA.

I asked him why it was so easy to come up with such amounts of money to protect trees at the taxpayers expense, but not to treat and protect people from TBDs!

Okay, I love trees and it certainly would have a devastating affect on all life if the forests were destroyed but how about some of that alarm and money going to people with lyme?

The "environment" is always more important than "people" .. hadn't you heard? [Wink]

my angle:
Beetles can travel to the US from China, but no ticks with lyme disease ever make it to Oklahoma.

I LOVE that they are spending so much of OUR money to eradicate a beetle and meanwhile lyme disease is silently spreading into states that deny it's very existence, people are getting sick and don't know why and nothing is being done about it.

This may be the beetle they are talking about. But it's not new.

Thanks Tutu for the confirmation that it really was possible for me to be infected back in the late 50's or early 60's in eastern OK.

The second article mentioned all the false positives in testing. Ha!

Although Lyme disease is frequently reported in Oklahoma, over-diagnosing of this disease due to false-positive test results is common; positive or equivocal screening tests should be confirmed by Western immunoblot. At present, it is unclear whether the disease seen here is Lyme disease or another Lyme-like disease. If true Lyme disease is present in the state, it is probably rare.
Sadly, one of the authors of this article (1998) is now the head of our state health department. He served as Deputy Commissioner of Disease and Prevention Services of the Oklahoma State Department of Health from 2001 to 2003 and was then appointed Commissioner of Health by the Oklahoma State Board of Health.

from 1993-1999 there were 289 cases of lyme reported
from 2000-present there are 4 cases reported

So GOOD news Lymednva, you probably COULD have caught it back in the 50's or 60's....but even though I had a CDC positive test in 2008 and numerous tick bites, doctors here still tell me that I don't have it-LOL

ps. I had a false-negative screening test. So I won't count as a case for my state.

I don't want to hijack this beetle thread so I will stop now!

Oh I'm sure it will be something very specific for the beetle. Who knows - maybe a few ticks will be eradicated along the way.

Maybe they're sending one free beetle over here with each lead laden toy [Roll Eyes]
