Has anyone on low-dose Cortef had a problem with losing hair?

I've been on 5mg a day since April, and for the last 2 months nearly, I've been losing a noticeable amount daily. I remove a handful of hair from hairbrush and drain pretty much daily. I think it's starting to show a little on my head now also on certain parts of scalp.

If you had a problem with this, did it grow back on lowering Cortef? I'm thinking of taking 2.5 mg and seeing what happens. I don't feel I want to stop it as it's given me a great deal of more energy. Yet, I don't want to be bald either!

I haven't had trouble with that myself. Are you sure it's not from thyroid problems?

I take 10mg a day.... have for about 5 yrs.

Thanks Lymetutu:)

I've just had thyroid tested, apparently it was normal.

I'm also considering Malarone as a possible culprit. I'm on that too, but that's it, no other meds.

Liver-

How long have you been taking Malarone? I had been taking it for about 8 weeks when I began noticing hair loss.

I continued taking it for another 3 months and then stopped because I was losing so much hair.

It has been been 7 weeks since I stopped the Malarone, but the hair loss has continued. In the last two days it seems to be lessening a bit, but am still losing a large handful each day.

Dr. S's Babesia book lists hair loss as a side effect of Malarone. My LLMD assures me though that the hair loss is temporary.

Thanks Kaitlin,

When I was on Malarone last time, about 4 months in I had hair loss and stopped taking it as it also wasn't making any difference to sx.

Then my new LLMD put me back on Malarone about 18 months ago and until now had not had hair loss, so I just don't know if it's the Malarone.

In any case, I think I am going to have to cut down on the Cortef to 2.5 and see if I can stop the Malarone before I end up bald!

I also am losing a good handful a day - drain and brush full after every shower!

I am not on any antibiotics and have a normal thyroid and also have hair loss, but it is not in clumps--from all over.

My GP thinks it may be stress. For women, out of balance female hormones can cause it as well.

In my daughter's case it was untreated lyme that caused her hair loss. After about a year of treatment it is growing back!!

Yes, it could be stress too and I have been under a LOT of it this year. But, I am going to be even more stressed if I go bald.
