Catheter site - ANTIMICROBIAL DISC ?

Greetings!

Up late --- too nervous about 1st appt w/ LLMD tomorrow !

Had a Groshong NXT catheter installed 2 1/2 weeks ago - goes from my right arm to my SVC. [confused]

Had to switch home health supplier that hospital ``selected'' for me after 1st shipment - they sent wrong stuff, dirty pump, rude, etc.

New supply company sent: 1 - Antimicrobial Disc ?
It says on the package: BIOPATCH Antimicrobial Dressing with Chlorhexidine Gluconate

I called the new supplier to ask what it was for... they said to go on my hole - my insertion site. ``It's newer - some hospitals are using them.''

Home health nurse coming out in AM to do blood draw, change caps, and dressing change. Supplier said to tell her to use it.

Anyone else use them?

I have very sensitive skin.

And I seem to have a bad reaction to the ``Chloraprep Swap'' --- my skin burns and is red and irritated for a day or so after they use it.
(2 dressing changes where they used the alcohol swap sticks instead did not give me this reaction.)

I am concerned that this may give me the same type of reaction.

Thank You,
Sam

If you have had a bad reaction to chloraprep - do not let them continue to use it. I it will get worse - particularly when continually covered and uncovered with adhesive.

My husband almost had to have his picc line pulled out because his the doc's thought his reaction to the chloraprep was an infection.....it was all red, and oozy. As soon s they started using betadine instead everything was all right.

I would *not* let the use anything that you've already shown a skin reaction to.

I had a reaction to the chlorprep too. Got little red bumps and itchy-itchies where it was swiped (of course, under the dressing- can't scratch there- aurgh!).

Maybe ask about your nurse using an alternative chemical.

They use the Antimicrobial Disc on me. I have VERY sensitive skin. Actually, I sit here with my eyes swollen half way closed and a red rash on my face because I accidentally slept my make up all night. Happens every time.

Anyway, the disks don't irritate my skin whatsoever. I hope you will have the same experience.

Well, to update, we opted not to use the disc.

The nurse thought that if I had the reaction to the Chloroprep swab stick then the same would occur with the disc since they were the same ingredient.

But then she used the Chloroprep to do the dressing change ! [bonk]

Not like we had much choice at that moment, plus she was late -- almost making me late for my much anticipated LLMD appt. so...

I sit here now with an ITCHY ! red, and oozy insertion site - no doubt from the Chloroprep just as it happened before. [Mad]

Those last 2 times it was used - it seemed to calm down in 2-3 days - we shall see, I guess.

Also, this time - for whatever reason- she used - for the first time - the skin prep.
I believe only under the stat lock - but it seems my skin doesn't care much for that either.

I told the nurse that with me - less seems the way to go, but ...

So what are some alternatives to the Chloroprep that I should I ask for?

Not that it will probably matter much, as much as I would like to keep on the IV abx - I very much doubt that will be a possibility for me [Frown]
but just in case.

Thank You, ALL for the advice !

call your iv company and ask them to send out a dressing kit with betadine and alcohol. if they do not carry them then they can just send out betadine swabs and alcohol separately. it will still be sterile and you can use the dressing in the kit and discard the chloroprep disc.
