Hi all. Ceftriaxone is generic rocephin.
I've only had 2 shots and not even full doses and everytime I have a shot, I have insomnia the same night.
The first shot with 1/3 dose, I slept 0. The next shot with 1/2 dose, I slept 3 hours.
I don't see insomnia listed as a side effect. I'm also having loud hissing in my ears, headache, severe joint pain in several large joints the day after the shot, fast pulse and nausea.
Oh, also severe thirst. I even got out my blood sugar monitor and checked it because I thought maybe I had finally slipped over into diabetes but no, that's not the case from what I can tell.
Many of those are probably side effects of the medication but I don't think insomnia is. Does anyone know?
I've also decided to cut out all calcium because apparently ceftriaxone binds calcium to make lovely stones. I'm thinking of asking my doctor for something to keep from getting stones. I think others here have mentioned actigall. Anyone have experience with that med? Is it difficult to tolerate?

I took Ursodiol (Actigall) 300 mg/twice a day the whole time I was on IV rocephin. It is supposed to help with the sludging the ceftriaxone can cause. I'm sure it helped me although it doesn't prevent everyone from having gallbladder problems.
I didn't have any negative effects from the actigall...seemed pretty benign.

That's really weird. I responded to hanging earlier but the response isn't here.
Anyway, thank's for responding hanginginthere. Did you have any insomnia with rocephin? Any other symptoms?
Thanks, Terry

Terry~Insomnia's been one of my struggles anyway, so it's hard to say if rocephin made it worse at the beginning! I take 50 mg. of diphenhydramine (benedryl) in order to sleep at night...a little xanax if it's really bad. For me, the benedryl works better than rozerem, trazodone or ambien CR.
Treatment (IV rocephin, IV zithromax, IV Penn G, flagyl and diflucan), was difficult and I felt pretty crummy a lot of the time. While a few bouts of refractory c. diff prevented me from continuing, I will say , at the end of my treatment I enjoyed several months of feeling sooo much better. I sometimes slept 7 hours straight! It was wonderful. My muscle pains and daily headaches were improved and I finally felt like doing things again...everything wasn't so overwhelming. Of course, I still twitched like crazy.
I hope you have the same improvement even though the road is tough. I definitely think it's worth it and would do it again if I could!
Laurie

Terry,
I suffered w/ insomnia before treatment, IV Rocephin was my first medication and I slept like a baby when I was on it.
I did not take anything for the gallbladder. The ID doc that I was seeing would not rx it, said any stones would be chrystalized rocephin and Ursodiol wouldn't make a difference.....
Don't really know if there is any truth to that or not.

I have never taken rocephin, but whenever I took strong anti-microbials I would often experience that severe thirst reaction. I was also almost sure I had diabetes. But in my case it was due to inflammation perhaps from the die-off. Anti-inflammatories helped a lot, and also probably helped the action of the anti-microbials. I try to take plenty of binders during die-offs also.
Die-off might explain the insomnia also... but it is just a thought... I am not positive about that.

Sorry I didn't respond to your thoughtful replies last night. I came down with sudden chills and spent the evening wrapped in a blanket to keep warm.
hanginginthere = sounds like you have a good plan for sleep. For some odd reason, the last few times I took Benedryl (a few years ago now) I was wide awake all night. I'm going to change the time of the injection. Hopefully it will help if I take it in the morning instead of late afternoon.
I'm sorry to hear that you ended up with c. diff and couldn't continue, especially since you were having good results. I hope you find another way to continue your improvement.
Thanks for the reminder, I'll start being dilligent about taking the boulardii that I have in my fridge and thanks for your well wishes. I have hope that rocephin will make a difference.
feelfit - amazing that rocephin had the opposite effect on your sleep. Sounds wonderful. Thanks for the info about the stones. I'll see what my LLMD say's about prescribing something.
Claire - thanks for the feedback on the thirst. I think you could be right about die off possibly causing the insomnia and thirst.
I felt so much better yesterday after drinking lots of water. It greatly helped the internal vibrations that I started getting even before I started the rocephin.
I've been on continious treatment for 2+ years now with lots of detox difficulty so it makes sense that toxins could be my problem.
I've added a pekana remedy for tissue drainage and a homeopathic endotoxin formula since I have so many genetic issues with detox. I'm already on cholestyramine for binding toxins. Hopefully I won't get as sick as I was the first year of treatment when I was overwhelmed with toxins.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. It helps a lot.
