I think my drug combo might be changed up in the dead of winter, which will be around the time my parents are taking hubby and I to the Caribbean.
I will be moving from my babesia treatment to something else at that point........will I need to worry if he puts me on Minocycline? What about if I'm on Rifampin?
I have been on Doxycycline for extended periods of time in the past, and while I did have more freckles come out, and I did get sun more easily, it wasn't anything drastic.
Though, I just don't want to be doing tons of damage to my skin (skin cancer is in my fam, etc) that isn't necessarily "obvious" from the outside results. I think that back then the nurse told me that even if I don't see lots of redness, the sun could still be doing damage from the Doxy.

Mino can cause sun-sensitivity, but not as much as doxy.

Even if I don't appear to be burning, should I worry about any type of "damage" from the meds+sun? The whole purpose of my trip would be to bask in the sun.......
I normally don't burn easily though, so I can afford to bask at the beach on occasion.

I don't wanna tell you the wrong thing - best to ask the doctor who prescribed it to you, or maybe call the pharmacy.
It may be as simple as putting on heavier sunscreen, but play it safe.
Also, how cool are your parents for taking you guys to the Caribbean?? Posts: 1197 | From New Jersey | Registered: Jul 2005

Though I agree the best thing is to talk to your doctor ... I will pass on that my LLMD had me stop mino for the time I was in Florida.

Okay, thanks six. That is the kind of info I was looking for.....
I will definitely ask my doctor, but I like to know what other LLMDs say because my doctor can be "noncommital" at times.
Which can be good with some things, but I like to hear multiple opinions.

Then I'm going to add a different experience - I was on 400 mgs doxy and had to actually STAY OUT of the sun the past two summers (& I have a young son!) because I was so sensitive - bleeding lips, terrible burns from just incidental exposure, etc. I stuck with the doxy because it was working so well on all my TBD stuff.
But, this summer I begged for a way to get outside again with my son and was given mino in place of doxy. I never got a single burn. I am always vigilant about sunscreen, though, and I don't bask, since being in hot sunshine makes me feel worse altogether, anyway. But I had no troubles with mino even though I had great sun sensitivity with doxy. I think many or most abx have some chance of increased sun sensitivity though, don't they?
As a side comment, another experience I had with the mino (taking since June, just 200 mgs daily) which I wasn't expecting at all, was a massively clearer head. BUT, for the first time, a really bad left knee!! So, there's more grist for your mill.
Anyway, good luck, definitely do as mentioned above, check with your own doc for what he's seen, and always err on the side of caution with sunscreens, etc.
But my mino/sun experience has been positive. I was out on the ocean on a boat the entire summer!
Have a great time -I am jealous about that vaca you have coming!!!

Otm, I had the same experience with Mino. I had no sun sensitivity. My LLMD still wanted me to stop it before going south.
But, I didn't stop the Levaquin, which is also supposed to have the sun sensitivity.
I had the same problems on doxy. I got sunburned through the car windows with #30 on.
