I think I have Lyme and Babesia. I have been diagnosed with Lyme, but I haven't yet been diagnosed with any co-infections.
If I were to start treatment for Lyme only, would the treatment make me more sick if I didn't treat Babesia or other co-infections at the same time?
Do I need to get diagnosed with any possible co-infections before starting treatment at all?
Thanks, electrolite

From what I've read, they lyme treatment will not be as successful if babesia is not first addressed - or at least addressed at the same time.

Get tested for all co-infections. Then, treat the co-infections first, then the lyme. Dr. Burrascano recommends treating bart first, then babs, then lyme.
I was initially just treated for lyme by a doc who did not test for co-infections. He thought they were rare. I eventually (after about 2 years on meds) became symptom-free, but as soon as I stopped antibiotics, I got sick as a dog, just like I was at the beginning. So, you will make no REAL progress if all you do is treat lyme. The co-infections help the lyme and help each other remain in your body is how I understand it.
(They all overwhelm the immune system--like AIDS--so that it cannot function. Therefore, you must get rid of them all to get well.)
Then, I went to a doc who tested me and I found out I also had babs and bart. He treated me for all 3 and, after 1 year, I was done. Feeling great for 3 1/2 years now.
Burrascano says that virtually every lyme sufferer has co-infections. Read it in his Guidelines, bottom of p. 4 "A huge body of research and clinical experience has demonstrated the nearly universal phenomenon in chronic lyme patients of co-infection with multiple tick-borne pathogens."

Thank you all for your responses! Keebler, TF and DizzyUp, I think you are right. I really need to find a doctor who can correctly diagnose me before starting any treatment.
