I'm wondering if anyone here has had a local reaction from giving themselves IM ceftriaxone shot?
I'd been on them for a little over 2 weeks - shots every other day - when my left leg got red, itchy and swollen.
I gave myself a shot in the right leg the next time, no reaction. Since the left leg was still bothering me, I gave my next shot in the right leg again but of course in a different spot. I got a reaction in the right leg but milder.
I have a call into my LLMD. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar reaction and if so, were you able to continue with treatment?
Thanks for any input.

The prescribing informaiton that I looked up suggest the IM should be administered by deep intragluteal injection. It is recommended that not more than 1 g be injected at a single site. Pain on i.m. injection is usually mild and less frequent when ceftriaxone is administered in sterile 1% lidocaine solution.
I'm not sure how much you are injecting at one time but I would definately opt for the upper outer quadrant of the glut than the quad muscle in the leg. The glut muscle is better equipt to handle multiple injections.
Hopefully the glut injections work for you and you don't get the localized reaction that you are getting with your quadracept injections.

Terry - just a thought - but how are you prepping the site before injection? My husband had a horrible skin reaction to the Chlora-prep (Chlorhexadrine) that the nurse used to prep his picc line site before dressing changes.
If by chance you're using that same anti-bacterial to clean the site before the IM injection you might try switching to betadine instead.

Mel - thanks for bumping my post.
Doomer - Thanks for the information! I had considered 2 injections for each dose but really didn't want to go there. I hate sticking myself every other day as it is but you may be right, I would probably do better to give it in 2 injections since it is more than 1 gram.
I am using lidocane to mix the ceftriaxone.
I've been trying to avoid asking for help with the injections but I may have to ask someone to give me shots in the hip or rear. Thanks for the suggestions.
SL10 - I'm using alcohol to prep the site. Actually, after feeling around on my legs last night, it seems more a muscle/tissue reaction than a skin reaction. I have big lumps where I'm having the reaction. Thanks for the suggestion though.
