I haven't posted here for a couple of years because I have been healthy (hooray!). Originally got Lyme 7 years ago, was sick for a year plus, got better, relapsed, got better, relapsed. And then I've been doing great for a long time.

My last relapse was odd because I had brand new symptoms that weren't present the first time (numbness in extremities).

So now, I'm in the midst of a new medical mystery, and I'm wondering if it could be a Lyme flare up. But the symptoms are nothing at all like the first time around.

I've had a tightness in my middle back (right below rib cage) that felt like it was in my kidneys. Last week it became very painful, with sharp "zings" that moved around my back and into my abdomen. I'm feeling bloated and having lots of gastro discomforts (no diarrhea, though). It's been pretty intense. It's like I have a painful belt that goes all the way around my waist, pressing at me almost constantly.

My doc has done urine analysis, blood tests, CT scan of abdomen. Everything comes back negative. He's stumped.

Hmmmm. Seems like I've been in this position before. Different symptoms, but same sense of bafflement. Is there any chance this is Lyme-related? I don't recall whether these type of symptoms are common.

Any thoughts, anyone?

I'd say "it's nice to be back," except that I had hoped I finally put all this in my past. [Smile]

Hi JT. I just got on here today for the first time in about a year. I too have gotten better, relapsed, etc. Mine started about 3 years ago.
Was horrible for about a year, symptom free for about 6 months and off and on since. It is now getting more and more frequent. This past month I had my first experience with severe back pain. I had not done anything to cause it but thought maybe I had pulled something without realizing it.
When you are having pains in your limbs can you push in that area and feel hardness like lumps?
Whenever I am having bad pain and soreness I can go right to the spot where it is originating, push in that area and feel it. Sounds weird I know but my boyfriend can feel right where they are too - which makes me feel better that I am not completely out of my mind. If he rubs them they disappear and I can tell exactly when he has broken them up because the severe pain and ache quits immediately. I have read that when they lump up they are multiplying - and if I am a good example I believe they multiply faster than rabbits.
Anyway, my back was hurting all the way up into my neck and down my leg. He started rubbing it - needless to say as he was rubbing he said "oh my gosh" right at the same time I said "its a lyme spot". He started finding the spots in my back, along my spine, my shoulder and neck, rubbed them out, and within a few hours I was okay. This probably sounds crazy, but everything about this disease is crazy. Anyway, you might try pushing and putting pressure around your waist and back in the area that it hurts and see if you feel any lumps that you can rub out. If they have gathered there it may be causing your pain.

That's so interesting, KK! I have noticed any lumps, but my pains do feel better when I apply pressure. I'll have to probe and see if I can find any! [Smile]

My doc actually just tested me for celiac today, which could be another reason for the back/abdomen pains. I'm back on the testing carousel!

Thanks for sharing your insights, and I hope you can get back on top soon. The best thing about having a relapse is knowing that you have rebounded before and that you most likely will again. That's so much better than the original despair I felt when I though I might never be well again.

Hi JT,

My daughter has had terrible kidney and lower abdominal pain for the past several days. She just got a CT scan and ultra-sound last night plus lots of blood work. All these tests came back negative.

She also had a laparoscopy to check her internal female organs which also came back negative except for some redness and inflamation in some of the connective tissue.

I know she is going through a really strong herx at this point and I was wondering if you could be herxing also.

Has anyone else had symptoms similar to kidney and sharp abdominal pain to which JT refers and is it from a herx?

Thanks, Paul.

JT - it's hard to know if it could be lyme. Since you've had a full work-up and nothing else has shown up - perhaps you should go to an LLMD and be evaluated to see if you have a co-infection or need further treatment for lyme.

KK - what you describe is likely trigger points. Common with myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. Can be caused by lyme.

My trigger points used to be very bad. Over the years, there have been times when I was literally sore everywhere with painful trigger points. They refer pain to other parts of the body. Lyme treatment has helped tremendously.

You can have a trigger point therapist work on them for you or you can get a book that describes how to use a theracane to help get rid of them.

Do a search here at Lymenet for more info about trigger points.
