My 19 year-old daughter is being treated for clinically diagnosed lyme (no test results in yet). At 18 days into doxycycline treatment, she came down with a urinary tract infection. Is this related to the treatment or to the possible underlying disease? Is it a herx reaction? Also, she had some abdominal bloating a few days before starting the doxy. Has anyone had this? Due to what? Connected to the UTI?

Since being diagnosed this January I've had several UTI's and when cultured came back positive for Group B Strep.
Nothing has seemed to help but I recently read of a simple sugar called D-Mannose (available at Natural Food Stores) that has helped some with this symptom.
Best Wishes, Michele

Usually you take Cipro for 5 days and your fine with a UTI. Drink cranberry juice too.

Satmariaj, This has been my experience with Doxy.
I was taking Doxy a few months when off and on I'd get the feeling that I had to empty my bladder, only a few drops would come out, and although wasn't terrible pain it was really uncomfortable, so one week it wasn't so bad then the next was worse.
That went on a couple months then in Feb. it was all the time. It was a burning sensation, and straining to empty my bladder. So I went to my LLMD,he did find a trace of blood in my urine and sent me to have an ultrasound,
which we all know for lymies, so many tests come back as they can't find anything wrong and that's how mine came back.
I did'nt have any symptoms since Jan. and he talked that I might be able to go off the doxy in March.
So when I went in he said to stay on it until May. But honestly I felt I could no longer take it and I went off it the end of March and it was almost immediately that I no longer had an uti/kidney infection or to this day I don't know what was going on but that was mar.07 and I have not had any problems since.
So no one will convince me that it was'nt the doxy.
I hope your daughter feels better soon. KENNEDY
