Used to happen to me a lot. It's been a lot better after the first year of lyme treatment.

Wet your throat before taking pills or eating. Take small bites. Eat slowly. Make sure you aren't being exposed to mold or anything that you are allergic to in food or air.

Hopefully someone else will come along with more suggestions.

I have had this happen quite often, especially as the day goes on and I get more fatigued.

I did have a swallow study done, it turned out normal, (even though I would cough up a pill 5 minutes after taking) but it was also done in the morning.

Try tipping your chin down to your chest when you swallow a drink, also turn your head to the right and to the left while swallowing. That sometimes is the only way I can get my meds to go down.

You have two sinus cavities in your throat.

Both are like little caves.

Food and/or medicine can get stuck in them if you do not have a strong swallow.

Here are some suggestions.

Small bites followed by small sips of something cold.

For every bite take a sip.

Sugar free lemon ice between each bite and sip can elicit a stronger, faster swallow.

The cold and the lemon work to make this happen.

Tucking your chin down all the way to your chest when swallowing.

If you are weaker on one side (right vs. left),

Then turn your head in that direction.

That will effectively close off the weaker side.

The head turn with a chin tuck would be recommended.

I can tell you how to do some stimulation to strengthen your swallow,

But it is much easier to get if you see it first.

If you do not have a weakness to either side that you know of,

The head turning will not really help.

The chin tuck will though.

Strange after doing dysphagia therapy (swallowing)

That I've used many of these maneuvers on myself.

Let me know if you need more info.

You need to make sure that food/liquid does not get below the level of the vocal cords.

Another technique is to grab your arm rests on a chair,

And push down really hard when going to swallow.

Makes sure your vocal cords are closed.

Hugs,

Geneal
