When I was first symptomatic with Lyme five months ago, I was nauseated and had been losing weight. My weight got down to about 105 and stayed there.
I figured I was eating about 600-800 calories per day but had no appetite for more.
But this past week I have been so hungry! I must be making up for lost time.
Maybe I should take my renewed appetite as a sign that the infection is clearing? I have been treating for three months of abx and have very few symptoms left.
The problem is it is hard to stay on the anti yeast diet with this appetite. Last night, I almost ate a whole bag of Doritos with a Big Gulp. And today, I had a juicy burger and fries and part of a corn dog and was STILL hungry.
This is not like me... even before Lyme, I didn't really crave this much junkfood nor did I eat it in such huge quantities.
What can I do? I am going to turn into a blimp with a yeast problem to boot.
Anyone else feel ridiculously hungry?

I did when I started taking doxy. I was ravenous and seemed to really want fatty items. It got better when I got off the doxy. What antibiotics are you on?

I've been on ceftin and doxy since August of this year. No change in meds yet.
I wonder if the doxy is causing this? Darla did your hunger start right away with the doxy?

You can, but please wait for more informed answers. I am new to this. I recall several seasoned memebers state this as a possible reason for uncontrollable hunger. Yeast / candida may be another. Hopefully others will chime in soon. Posts: 7545 | From The 5th Dimension - The Twilight Zone | Registered: Mar 2008

Absolutely yeast... hunger is a sign of yeastie beasties.
Better stick to the yeast diet religiously.....otherwise you just keep feeding the yeast and it's a vicious circle

I have the same problem. I need to eat every 2-3 hours (unless I'm asleep). I'm not on Doxy anymore (been off for several months), but I would say that my appetite changed right around the time that I was on it. I've been on a variety of abx since then.
I think that it's a result of the limited access we give our bodies to simple carbs (sugars). Our bodies like to take the path or least resistance when it comes to using energy sources. Normally it just grabs simple carbs out of the bloodstream and converts it into energy (glucose). Whatever's left over gets stashed in the bank in the form of fat for later use.
On a "normal" diet there are plenty of these carbs to go around (check the rate of obesity in America), but on an anti-candida diet there's less to be had. The body burns it all and asks for seconds... and thirds. It also looks to other sources for energy like fat. That's why we lose weight.
My LLMD says that many patients lose weight, but that it usually stabilize at or around that persons "optimal" weight. My weight has settled down to where I use to get when I was racing. It puts me below the general BMI (body mass index) scale for a guy of my height and build, but it "fits" me.
Unless you have a really difficult time maintaining your weight you should probably be okay. Still, you might want to get your thyroid and adrenals checked to make sure there's not a problem there. Having them off balance can mess with your metabolism.
As for tips on staying away from Doritos and Big Gulps... that's a tough one.

May I also add another consideration: Your endocrine system. After my first round of (insufficient) treatment, I experienced weeks of ravenous hunger, extreme fluctuations in blood sugar, and multiple other symptoms that led me to an endo. After alot of exhaustive testing, he concluded that something was "battering" my immune and endocrine systems although in isolation everything but my thyroid tested fine. Changing thyroid meds AND going back on antibitoics fixed it for me. Kris

In general, i'm not very hungry. Most of the time i'm nauseated and have to make myself eat every couple hours to keep blood sugar levels up.
But I also have episodes where i'm extremely hungry. Ravenous. This is I could eat a hoarse kind of hungry. And sometimes when my stomach is actually full I still feel hungry.
I don't understand it. For me, it's just one of those mysteries that come with this disease. Neuro problems are my worst. I also have GI problems caused by vagal neuropathy so that may be why.

Yes, it was pretty immediate I think (trying to remember). I would say within a couple of days of starting doxy.
