From what I understand, swelling of the joints is in the late/chronic stage of Lyme.
I don't remember any real symptoms besides maybe some little stuff in 2003. It seems as though I took the express route to late/chronic stage.
I don't get it, how could I bypass the other two stages without being concerned about anything???
Fortunately, my LLMD said that he considers joint problems low on the totem pole as far as difficulty to treat is concerned.
I'm about to start 3 weeks of Mepron/Zithro tomorrow, then 4 weeks of IV Vancomycin and Flagyl after that. Kind of leary on the Vancomycin though and may call to see if I can do something different when the time comes.

From everything I've read and what knowledgable doctors have told me is those stages are more or less bogus. People have many different manifestations of the disease and some don't get sick after a tick bite, but rather carry a latent/silent/asymptomatic infection until a stress trigger weakens the immune system and activates it.
So I wouldn't concern yourself over the definition of stages based on symtpoms, what's more important is how long you've been infected. And if I remember right the spirochete enters the brain within 48 hours or some time-span fairly fast. Maybe someone else can back that up.

While the model is perhaps useful in the description of syphilis, Lyme doesn't really fit it that well. Virtually all cases of Lyme are chronic (even those that are dealt with appropriately while the tick is still attached), and many develop sx like encephalopathy very early on.
