The HIDA scan uses injected technetium (Tc99)....last time this was used for a gastric emptying test it didn't go so good.

Had a cluster of neuro events just after the gastric emptying test and for a couple weeks after the test, such as: 3 seizures that day, toes turned in and caused stumbling, severe stabbing pain in foot, mouth spasms made speech hard to understand, eyelid twitching, began dropping things, such as cups and pencils.

...and that was only after eating this tracer in oatmeal.

What would happen if it is given by IV? I hate to think what might happen.

I've had both test performed a couple of times and didn't have any lasting side-effects. I believe the injection they give you for the hida is much different. The injection for the hida causes your gallbladder to immediately start contracting.....I had about a minute of extreme nausea/cramping but it subsided.

I'd talk to the folks that will be running the test about your concerns.

I spoke to the nuclear medicine supervisor. She told me the same radiological agent is used for both tests...the HIDA scan and the gastric emptying test.

You eat the agent for the gastric emptying test, but it is injected into a vein for the HIDA scan. The radiological agent is technetium, Tc 99.

Ultrasound is the best way to evaluate the gallbladder.

Only need to fast 6-8 hours.

ask to do a fatty meal ultrasound. I couldn't do the HIDA scan either and this is the alternative my dr offered.
