There was an article in the local newspaper this past weekend about deer tick surveillance.

Right now its the deer hunting season in Wisconsin. Seems the university and state health dept have been sending teams of researchers to the different deer registration units in order to scour the incoming deer carcasses, looking for deer ticks.

Researchers are hoping to track the dilemma of the increase of lyme in the state. In the 1990s there was about 500 cases of lyme reported. Last year, over 1800 cases of lyme were reported in the state of Wisc. The survey being conducted now is to look for patterns in the different counties to try and find a better way to slow down LD.

Definetly a rising epidemic, and none of the main hmo/pcp drs really understand it...

Very interesting. I hadn't heard about that. I may be wrong here, but I would think it is a little late in the season to do this to get accurate numbers. Isn't tick season over? Well at least I think it is where I am at. Too bad they couldn't do this during the prime for ticks in spring. I think they would get way more accurate findings then.

I think they were just trying to gather any data they could and thought of using the deer hunt as a method of being able to go right to the source.

Personally, Id like to see them simply randomly walk through the different woods with a sweeping net and see what they can find.

If they cant find any, all they have to do is ask me to walk with them. I cant walk anywhere in the woods, fields without having a tick crawling on me.

Now, if only we could get those health people to develop some sort of abx that could wipe them out in a matter of days.... yeah...dream on.
