Good call.
We have a level four research facility about 20 miles from our house.
Their main research at the Tulane Primate Research Center
Continues to focus on Lyme disease and AIDs.
Of course, we have no Lyme here in Louisiana.
Hugs,

Barb,
Thanks for posting. I still think more goes on in that facility than what is published. Thank goodness it was declined to a level 4.

Press Release
Attorney General Says Feds Rightfully Rejected Plum Island As Site For Highest-Security Bio Lab
December 4, 2008 ******************
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today said the federal government has rightfully rejected Plum Island as the site for a new National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) to study the world's deadliest incurable diseases.
Blumenthal also pledged to continue to fight to keep Plum Island open and operating, and its employment maintained.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has selected Kansas State University over Plum Island, NY and several other sites for the new facility.
The new facility may replace an existing research facility on Plum Island and be designated a Level 4 NBAF, the highest security designation, which would allow study of some of the deadliest biological threats to humans.
Plum Island, eight miles off the Connecticut coast, currently operates as a Level 3 facility involving pathogens such as foot-and-mouth disease -- dangerous to cattle, but not communicable to humans.
"This decision -- removing Plum Island from the list -- is a victory that inoculates against a public health and safety nightmare," Blumenthal said.
"Plum Island's proximity to prime terrorist targets and densely populated places makes it vulnerable to attack, a preposterous place to breed the world's deadliest incurable diseases.
Plum Island is also an emergency-response catastrophe in waiting -- water locked and difficult for public safety officials to protect from afar in the event of a large-scale attack.
"I urge that the existing Plum Island facility remain open to allow continued research of lower risk. It does vital, profoundly important work for our national security.
"The new facility would study and experiment with the most dangerous organisms, including pathogens transmitted from animals to humans, that have no known cures or vaccines.
Such a deadly and dangerous research facility -- while vitally important -- deserves the greatest security protection possible, far greater than Plum Island can provide.
"The federal government has heard our call, and rightfully recognized that Plum Island is the worst possible place to house deadly incurable diseases.
I am hopeful that the federal government will also recognize the value in preserving Plum Island's existing vital, lower risk research."
In formal comments earlier this year, Blumenthal said the federal government should immediately remove Plum Island from consideration for the new facility because its draft environmental review of the site was "profoundly deficient, and legally insufficient," failing to fully consider the overwhelming risks of this facility, in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
