Has anyone ever heard of treating Lyme disease with Betaine Hydrochloride?
quote: "Betaine hydrochloride is a source of hydrochloric acid, an acid found in digestive juices that's involved in the production of the enzyme pepsin. Pepsin helps with protein digestion.
Hydrochloric acid also controls the levels of bacteria and yeast."
A friend of a friend apparently successfully treated their Lyme disease under the care of an alternative practitioner- taking high doses of this stuff.
While I usually do not go for alternative medicine, we are at the point where we will try ANYTHING.
I take this any time I eat protein to digest protien. I have never heard it helps with lyme. I take around 6 a day, 2 at each meal.

btmb03 - that means that you already have too much acid in your stomach.
Have you tried digestive enzymes yet ?

Here's a quote from /www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C42561.html :
The quote recommends not using HCl long-term :
Hydrochloric Acid (Trial) Some people with low stomach acid have no symptoms that are obviously related, and are led to believe they are digesting properly, when they are not. An HCl trial is a safe, worthwhile, and relatively accurate way to discover if an insufficiency exists. Since the long-term administration of supplemental HCl may result in reduced stomach output of acid, administration is advised for diagnostic purposes and short-term use only. Short-term use may result in a return of normal acid production.
Digestive Enzyme (Trial) A trial using plant-based enzymes to enhance digestion demonstrated their additional benefit of improving hydrochloric acid production in those individuals who were hypochlorhydric.
END QUOTE.

Dr C in Missouri had a protocol for using this. There were a couple of threads posted about a year ago. Hubby tried this briefly -- never got anywhere near the recommended dose. He does take 1 or 2 capsules of Betaine HCL with both lunch and supper and has done so for several years -- even before Lyme illness.
Personally think it may help with parasites more than Lyme specifically.
Will try to find the old threads and post them here.
I felt that the other herbs in the protocol may have been more beneficial in treating tickborne diseases than the actual Betaine HCL. The 2nd product in the protocol was an herbal "activator" -- both products from Quantum Research I think. turmeric was one of the primary ingredients. There have been some good threads posted on this herb here also.
