Hello,

I got bit by a tick in Florida and returned to New Mexico and developed chronic Lyme.

I was on doxycycline (200mg) for 6 weeks but things got worse, then Rocephin IV for 3.5 months which helped a lot.

Now I'm starting Rifampin (600mg) and doxycylice (400mg). I'm getting better but my tongue gets coated and I need to fight yeast.

What did your doctor prescribe for yeast? What was the dose and duration.

Thanks for any suggestions!

By the way, I flew out to see a Lmye doctor on Monday in Mesa AZ, but he wanted to treat me with an electrical wand and $8,000 in coffee enamas. I can't afford to see another Lyme doc like that!

I had a severely coated tongue due to candida-induced LD. I tried Diflucan, but it was not very effective for my thrush.

Plus,I was already having liver abnormalities due to LD, so I did not want to stay on Diflucan very long.

Based on Dr. Crook's book, The Yeast Connection, I requested Nystatin tablets, which are better than the oral suspension.

The tablets do not contain all that sugar and are easily transportable.

They can also be crushed, mixed with juice (or water if you can stand the bitter taste), and swished in the mouth for thrush.

Nystatin is also a very safe and inexpensive medication.

I started taking one tablet (500,000 IU) of Nystatin four times a day.

For 2 of the doses, I would crush the tablets, mix with a liquid, swish it around in my mouth for a minute, and then swallow; this helps treat the upper GI.

I would take the other 2 doses as tablets for the lower GI.

After about 2 weeks, the thrush was only about 75% better, so I upped the dosage of Nystatin to 2 tablets 4 times a day.

Shortly thereafter, the "white carpet" on my tongue started coming off in chunks. Since then, I have not had any thrush.

I have cut back to 2 tablets 3 times a day (just because it is more convenient), and I seem to be fine. My doctor is keeping me on Nystatin since I am still on abx.

I would also recommend taking a probiotic while on abx or antifungals.

I have tried several different kinds of probiotics (some of which were very expensive) but have gotten the best response from Digestive Advantage, which is inexpensive and can be found at Target and Wal-Mart.

Diflucan works for me.

It also hits the Lyme.

I am on a diflucan protocol for Lyme.

However, prior to that when my yeast was bad,

I would take 200mg of diflucan a day for five days.

Then reduce back to twice a week (200mg).

Rifampin is a major yeast grower for me.

So is flagyl.

Watch the diet very carefully.

Take a really good probiotic.

I take nystatin pills when breaking from diflucan.

They help, but not like diflucan for me.

Liquid nystatin (swish) has sugar in it.

It is very sticky too.

Hugs,

Geneal

I was prescribed Nystatin the entire time I was on abx. I also took Diflucan when needed.

Diet is CRUCIAL!

Candida diet and elimination:

Lyme symptoms list compared with yeast symptoms
http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/021202.html

DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

Quit eating sugar. The Yeast connection book is good. Basically no sugar, rice, pasta, bread. Eat whole, real food. i.e. meat and veggies that you cook at home. restaurant food is loaded with unhealthy additives. Eating healthy is of prime impotance. Just as important as treating ....................
