I've read a lot here about infrared saunas and am interested in getting one. I've looked on ebay for portable ones, and find two basic styles: one you sit in on a chair, and one you lay in on the floor.
Is one better than the other for removing toxins? They both look easy enough to set up and use.
Any other pros or cons for either style?

I have the type FIR sauna that you lie down in, with head out. I believe it's a Sunlight Solo.
I really like the lie-down type. The whole body is surrounded in IR and it's much more relaxing to lie than sit.

I've been researching as well. I hear from others that the full sauna, that includes the head is good for neuro symptoms and brain detox...It goes deep. The portable is good, but won't get the head. Sunlight Sauna and Heavenly saunas are recommended. Heavenly saunas use no glue or chemicals at all...Sunlight saunas use a finish on the outside only...so if chemicalsensitive, you need to lok at how each sauna is made.

If you can't afford, or don't have room for a full size sauna, the portables do a great job.
Getting the head would be nice, but sweating is the objective, and you can sweat very well from the chin down.
Just get a big enough one for your size. The regular tents are for little people. My daughter is 5'1" and that's the limit for the regular size.

If possible, it is best to visually inspect all panels if buying used. If new, be sure of the company's return policy and shipping charges if the unit is below par. You want to be sure to get zero plywood in any unit. Zero glue - or at least find one with a non-toxic glue, with verification of that.

You will want to be sure to read this.
There is one brand that had issued some with plywood (that's really bad) although they said they did not.
I had a friend who had the same type as the people in this article and the company (HTH) refused to make good, even after the company was found to be lying about it.
I saw the plywood after she took it apart - after she had become sicker from trying to use it.
She aired it out for a very long time, with frequent calls to the company in which they minimized the problem but did not come forward with the plywood confession.
Off-gassing it did not help at all. Finally, she had to give it away to someone who thought they could handle the plywood's fumes.
While not all this brand's models are bad, they did have at least one very bad batch and there are still some of these bad ones out there, so be very careful. I don't know if they deliberately made a bad batch or got fooled themselves. But they should have corrected the wrongs and did not.

Heavenly Heat is the best-No toxic anything. It costs more but it is worth it!

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked into Heavenly heat, but it seemed pretty expensive. I may try a tent one first to see if it helps like I hope. If it does, then I may go for a wood one.

I didn't notice any changes using the IFR Sauna, but I know a lot of people who do. I work out on a stationary bike and sweat extremely heavily for about one hour a day (I kill myself doing it, but it actually makes me feel better overall).
So sweating is important, and I find that the cardiovasular exercise keeps my heart in better shape.

When purchasing an FIR, a cedarwood carbon based ceramic heater is what you would want. You can find one and two person, full sized saunas on ebay for quite a deal. I had a blanket one first and hated it. I liked the lying down part, but lying there in my own sweat made me miserable and itchy.
It is a great investment you will use over many years. We have a local spa here in which also uses the sunlight saunas. So I got to try before I spent my hard earned dollars.
Why carbon based ceramic? Because it is my understanding that carbon generated FIR encompasses more of the entire spectrum than other cheaper saunas.

I love my Saunex (fiberglass, cabinet style). Your head is exposed and that was important for me to breathe fresh air and not the stuff I just sweated out. My head and face sweat as much as the rest of my body. Joints have never felt better!
