Okay, I was on Azith (prior to lyme diagnosis) for 7 months. Some stomach pain, but mostly okay.
After Lyme diagnosis, the azith was upped to 750 a day and also 2x teaspoon of Mepron.
My stomach could NOT handle it. Even lowering the Azith, I was a mess. After 4 weeks, had to stop.
Doc decided to focus on treating the lyme. Started me on 1000 mg Ceftin a day. Did okay for 4 weeks or so (though herxed nasty) stomach-wise. Then, bad nausea and severe abdominal pain. Stopped for a couple of days, stomach got better.
Re-started. Within a week, severe nausea 24/7, and abdominal pain. Took another break. Has been 5 days, still bad (not AS bad, but bad).
I read so many here taking 3-5 antibiotics. I don't know how you do it. I've taken antibiotic before all of this in my life--and never had this kind of trouble.
And then it gets hard for me to know, is the nausea the meds (certainly part of it is), or the babesia or the lyme....? I mean, I know there's no way to tell.
Or maybe I just have trouble with Ceftin and Mepron....and it's coincidence.....
Those who have had GI issues....how long AFTER stopping abx did you find some relief.
And btw, I have done tons of quality probiotics, kefir, low-sugar, carb, and no glutin diet. I've done the 'right' things.
thanks.

Hey hey..
Please do not try to keep up with the Jones when figuring out how many antibiotics to take. NOT a good idea.
Each of us is different... and we all can't take high doses and/or a combo of meds.
If you are having these problems it is your bodies way of telling you to stop. It can't reach up and slap you in the face to make you stop.. it can only give you the warnings you are getting.
In MY opinion you will need to do something different.
You may also have c-diff... etc.. so do have a doctor check you out.
My advise is to listen to your body. You, after all, are the only one that has to live with it.
Thanks for saying that...I'm not trying to 'keep up', but I appreciate your support that way.
It's more that I'm astonished at the seemingly-iron guts of others here.
I also get concerned that I can't handle the treatment I need. My doc has been working to get me on Rocephin, which might help a bit.
I was checked for c-diff when I had the mepron issues. It really, really tore me up. But the C-diff tests were okay.
thank you

When I was on multiple abx I had to take VSL#3, a probiotic with a very high number of bacteria - 450 billion! If I didn't take it, no matter what quality of probiotic, I had constant diarrhea.
I also took Theralac and Ultra Flora, which are also strong probiotics, but not nearly as strong as VSL#3.

I sure don't have a stomach of iron. When I took 2 antibiotics together for 1 month, I had nausea and the big D every day. My body can only handle one med at a time and even then I have to stay on top of the stomach issues.
I really don't know how so many people are able to handle numerous meds at one time. And frankly, I'm not even sure that it is even that helpful. Just my opinion, but it seems to me that too many meds just breaks your body down, whereas taking less helps it along.
I agree with not trying to keep up with the Jones. That is funny! But seriously some people are taking way more medication than needed. Like a friend of mine always says....Slow and steady wins the race.

I guess I could just call you, but I figure I'd write a reply here. Sorry to hear that you are still having GI issues. Have you thought about possibly taking the antibiotics via IV? or getting those nasty shots that I was getting. Can't remember the name offhand, but I can look it up for you. The shots that you get in the butt.
They bypass the GI, and you might be able to take them better.
Give me a call later, and I'll get you the name. Did you see Dr. H in Malibu? (The Dr. H, that I go to)
Hope you feel better soon.

I have had such a hard time GI wise with the antibiotics. I did ok on zithromycin and mepron and then started on 200mg of doxy a day. All was well until we went up to 400mg a day of doxy. I have not taken any antibiotics since christmas. The pain is coming back like before diagnosis. My stomach still isn't right. I take 40mg of prilosec and pepcid as needed up to twice a day. Thursday is my endoscopy to see what is going on in there. I had an abdominal sonogram last week. It is so frustrating. Try cutting out all acid and spicy food. Coffee was a big trigger for me. Good luck I know how you feel. mom of boys
