I am asking for my dad. I thought it won't hurt anything.
He has alot going on right now and to me it seems to be screaming lymes. He has had two tests recently and both are neg. Lots of swelling in his knee, pain in his shoulders, and neck and now recently his one hand is swelling up.
Three years ago he had a deer tick removed. The dr then treated him for two weeks just in case. That said maybe I just answered my own question?? Any advice would be great.

I guess it would be okay as long as he isn't allergic.
Of course I am not a doctor.
If he herxes that would be an indicator, wouldn't it?
Have you gotten your Dad into see a LLMD?
Maybe worth talking him into.

Yeah it's fine. A high dose of about 400mg is useful. 200 x 2, but remember that multiple drug combinations are more useful once the disease has progressed into the later chronic stage. However, he really should see a Lyme Specialist. There are some in your area I believe. E-mail me for a list of states you want for an LLMD (If you choose to look around)

The worst doxy can do is make you get sunburned more easily; Lyme can kill you. for someone with disseminated disease, though, doxy alone will almost certainly not be enough.

Thanks for the quick responses. My dad came with me when I saw my LLMD the first time due to the drive and my hubby needing to stay for the kids. At that time based on my dad's symptons and history with a tick bite, that LLMD gave him the rx for doxy. Not sure what dose. We were suprised but this LLMD does treat by listening to your symptons and doesn't believe in the tests due to the problems with the testing.
My dad did take the doxy for 2-3 days and said he got worse. I was thinking it was prob a herx??
He will contact my llmd. He did just have knee surgery. On top of this swelling he had a torn tendon. The surgeon said there was something definetly wrong when he did the surgery. Sent the fluid for biopsy but nothing came back. He is in alot of pain and was contemplating taking what he has while he waits to get in to the see the llmd.

Don't let him get put on a steroid by his surgeon--the results on those are often catastrophic for Lyme patients (more about this in the Burrascano guidelines.)

jlc, doxy hits immediately for most of us. i was told it hits hardest in the areas you were actually bitten.
if it gets so rough for him, have him quit; get better, and then resume doxy. again, i'm NOT a dr.
also recent surgery has stirred the spirochete up in his body!! so take extra caution.
they found something extra; yep, chetes that no one knew of earlier. good luck.

Everyone here is right. It likely was a Herxheimer reaction, and that would increase inflammation and pain, including at the surgical site. Those are things that need to be worked out with the specialist.
