I probably should have posted this a week ago, but oh well.
I started Levaquin about 5wks ago for Bartonella.
The last 3wks my left knee has been either REALLY swollen or at best just a bit swollen. Stiff and painful as well, with severe motion impairment.
The right knee started to go down the same path a few days ago.
I've also had severe muscle pain the last 2 wks or so in my arms and the last week in my legs.
The day before yesterday I slept through my am abx and didn't wake up till 3:30pm, so didn't get the levaquin at all that day.
Yesterday my knees were the best they've been in weeks, and the left knee had almost full range of motion back. Still a little swollen but SO much better!
Two questions...
Does this sound like maybe a herx to the levaquin (thus the improvement the day after a missed dose)?
What can I do to alleviate the swelling?
It's actually tons better now, but at the worst I was racking my brains trying to think what to do for the swelling. I am on so many meds I was scared to take an anti-inflammatory since they all come up with interaction warnings online.
Rest didn't help the swelling at all, and actually I think might have been making it worse?? Ice didn't seem to help either.
Is there something I can take that would be safe with all these scripts...
Thanks for any input!! Chris congenital, dx'ed Jun '08

I would consider something for inflammation but more importantly, have you called your LLMD and let them know about these symptoms, especially the muscle pain?
Levaquin can damage tendons so please keep a close eye on any muscle pain.

Magnesium! Magnesium! It's important to take it when taking levequin, so not to have any tendon damage. Just take it 6 hours before or after your antibiotic dose and it will help to prevent tendon damage. It helps with heart symptoms as well. Burrascano posts it in his new 2008 guidelines under treating Bartonella-like organisms. Good luck!
