I have been on Doxycycline 100 mg 2 x a day for

5 days now and am in agony...stomach pain and up

all night on the potty...my doc says 400 mg a

day of doxy is too toxic for the body...I can't

even imagine doubling this dose and surviving...

Increrdible thing is ..the fatigue is a little

better..my eye is truly open first time in

months , better hearing, clearer thinking. less

joint pain. but last night my rib cage in the

back both sides hurt so bad it was hard to

breathe. but better today...had shingles on both

sides came out two weeks ago..I don't know what

to eat. but have been eating butterscotch

krimpets to keep the belly pain at bay..only to

return 15 minutes later...Drinking about a gallon

of water a day..Please help me through this

I do not want to stop this medicine....

What are you eating when you take your medicine?

Whole wheat toast with margarine, 350 mg liquid

tylenol 10 oz of water 10 minutes before and 10

oz of water with the capsule followed by 350 mg

liquid tylenol and 10 oz of water about 15

minutes later. I have a haital hernia and

need the water to be certain the pill goes

all the way down. Since I have been sick

meat does not appeal to me at all. I ate

grilled chicken breast tender and fresh

chopped veggies stir fryed last night for

supper ,,,first meal I cooked in three weeks..

Toast may not be enough. Some of us have found a little more, a small breakfast works better.
Stay on your feet or if sitting - get up and move around for the first 30-40 minutes. As someone else here pointed out - if you lay down - you will get a stomach ache and heartburn.
You didn't mention probiotics. Very important you take a probiotic 2-3 hours inbetween the antibiotic to replace the "good bacteria" necessary. You might double-up on the probiotic until your stomach feels better.
Be sure to let your LLMD office know about your stomach issues.
Good Luck and get well soon.

Toast may not be enough, esp if it's only one slice. You must eat when taking doxy. Do not lie down for at least 30 min after taking the doxy.

Why all the tylenol? Maybe you could take it later, not at the same time?

I do not lay down for 2 hours after I take it..I

have a Passage problem..doctor says..ct scan

contrast I drank was still there 1 week later

when I had hip xray done..the doc didn't believe

it had been a week so I have been avoiding

anything that might make the doxy not effective.

Have divericulosis,,tried probiotics bloated so

badly was bigger than when I gave birth,,cramping

and pain then horrible fish smelling diahrrea..

is that normal for probiotics? Endo doc told me

not to use them but I tried it anyway. The

tylenol is for the belly pain,, it feels like

teeth biting my stomach..not heartburn, just pain

The tylenol helps and so does eating but the

eating only helps about 15 minutes then it

returns with a vengence. Many thanks for your

input and info. I am at a loss..have not been

able to work for 6 weeks since this hit me. I

feel useless and hubby even said when he saw the

shingles on my side,,those aren't shingles,,

they are bed sores...he has an incredible sense

of humor and has been wonderful through this but

I feel like I am not pulling my share and it is

very sad to me. Thanks again for your time and

concern when I know you are all dealing with this

as well..Take care of you and yours

Definitely sounds like you need to speak with your doctor. My doc prefers tablets vs capsules in assisting with the digestion of doxy and also says not to take it on an empty stomach. Hope you get a handle on this.. when I tried taking the capsules on an empty stomach, I was curled up in pain for 2 to 3 hours afterward... food and switching to the tablets made a huge difference for me. Again, everyone is different.

Doxy is definitely not the easiest abx on the stomach, but it sounds like you have some intestinal issues that need to be addressed apart from Lyme. Your MD thinks that 400mg of doxy is too toxic, but you are taking 1400mg of Tylenol a day? How often do you get ALT/AST liver function tests done?

agree with tcw
have you ever had an endoscopy done to check for H.Pylori?
can only suggest you can try to eat according to your blood type as outlined by the book "Eat for Your Type" and see if avoiding certain foods will help.
My daughter and I are both doing this and it has helped us a great deal.

One time when I started doxy I had severe stomach pain. I felt like my whole digestive tract was burned. After 4 or 5 days I couldn;t take any more. I stopped it for a few weeks.

I started the doxy again a few weeks later and it was just fine. It was hard to beleive it was the same drug that made me feel like I was dying a few weeks before.

When on antibiotics I can't eat any sugar, fruit, grain. I need to take lots of probiotics and need to eat when I take the antibiotics. It works best to eat 1/2 a meal and then take the pills. I ate lts of nuts & vegetables.

I need to eat many small meals a day and need to eat when my stomach hurts. I gained weight as a result but I did get better.

Try taking the doxy with your meals and plenty of water. I don't think it's really advisable to take it with Tylenol, however. You know that too much Tylenol can cause liver damage, don't you?

What are butterscotch krimpets?

Switch to a different medication because 200 mg per day is not enough. It's got to be 400 mg/day. You are supposed to eat a full meal with each Doxy dose and drink lots of water and then do not lie down for 3 hours afterward. if you do not eat when you take it you will wreck your tummy.

You should definitely be tested for C.Diff if you are having "fish smelling diarrhea"... I Hope you feel better soon.

I've been having GI issues myself incorporating doxy to my regiment recently. I stopped it a couple days ago after I bumped it up to 300 mg/day for a few days (trying to get to 400) as I was being cautious that I may have had a c diff. infection. But my bowel movements and stools returned to normal the next day and have been fine the past few days even while continuing other ABX/anti-infectives.

I've started up the doxy again, hoping that I can end up adjusting to it as I feel it was doing something in regards to the lyme. And in hindsight I think the mino I had taken previously was effective, albeit rough (general symptom-wise, not on my stomach) for me while on it.

Anyone else have experiences to add of doxy being quite rough for you on the stomach/GI at first but ending up tolerating it fine even at higher dosages? I eat a full meal when I take it so that's not an issue though I may look into tablets vs capsules if I can't adjust to the capsules okay.

And hatsnscarfs, I'm assuming the doxy you started back up and was fine on was the same generic/form that you had issues with initially, right?
