What are the normal values for blood oxygen levels?

I went to the docotr today for this respritory virus and the oxi-pulse showed a blood oxygen level of 95-96. The PAC said that it was a 'little" low but attributed it to the respitory virus(sp) can't think of how to spell that for the life of me [bonk]

So at what point should one be concerned? 91? 95?

Thank you,
Feelfit

My son has Bronchial Pulmonary Displasia (Chroni Lung Disease)

We have a pulse ox at home and I am told for him at least, anything under 95% is cause for concern. I think adults are the same.

Especially with a respiratory virus, if you go below 95% I peronally would feel a bit concerned.

I'm not a doctor or nurse but have had PLENTY of experience with this type of stuff, although with a child.

Again I could be off because I am dealing with a child and I'm paranoid about that stuff anyway... He's on oxygen at night, but from the time he was born until about a month or so ago he was on O2 24/7..

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Erika,

Sorry about your son. He has improved if only on O2 at night? I hope so.

Yeah, my carbon dioxide levels were low on my labs too....now the slightly low blood oxygen levels. Can doctors not lok at these things and put 2&2 together?

I feel like a hypochondriac having to draw these things to their attention......

or maybe it's nothing to worry about yet?????

Hi Feelfit

Yes he has improved greatly over the last year. Slow but steady. He was a micro preemie, born at 24 weeks. His lungs of course were not developed so because of being intubated for so long his lungs are scarred.

He should grow out of it completely but will probably have asthma. With what he's been through though, we can handle asthma!

As far as you go, low O2 and low CO2 seem of some concern. Are you on meds for this resp infection? Or because its a "Virus" theres nothing they can give?

Do you have a nebulizer at home? That helps allot with respiratory issues! In my experience anyway.

Sending healing thoughts your way!

I was given a z-pak today (zithromycin). I am already on 4 grams of amoxy per day.....no, no nebulizer.

I will see if I feel better tomorrow. Thanks for your concern. And all the best to your little one.

95-96 is totally fine Feelfit. Anything below 92 is a concern.

Do you smoke ! or exposed to second hand smoke?
It's probably nothing to be concerned about but
I would recheck it a few times and if you stay at
low 90s I would have an
(alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) that is produced by the liver.)

This can cause Emphysema with resulting low Oxygen.

Ha! Al, smoke? Me? Queen of health and anxiety?

Nope. and not around smoke either. I am thinking I am not breathing correctly.

Thanks Seek, my brother is a paramedic and he said it is nothing to worry about esp. with a upper respiratory infection.

I am wigging out. Too many things to deal with at once.

I was diagnosed in 2008 with Lyme, Bartonelli, and Babesia. Lyme specialist thinks I've had Lyme for 26years.

Currently, I've been having some pulmonary symptoms and was hoping someone could direct me to the right reference.

Oxygen levels dropping to 88% with exertion (after 6 min stress test)

Pulmonary function test showing decreased diffuse capacity and lung volumes

Echocardiogram showing increase of blood pressure in tricuspid valve of 10% in 4 months

Mild Valve regurgitation in 3 out of 4 valves in a year.

Symptoms of extreme shortness of breath with exercise, dizzy, faint, chest pain, tingling on left side of body, confusion, and loss of depth perception after exertion. Swollen abdomen, blood and mucus in stool, nausea, swelling in legs. Wake up gasping for air, cough with and without mucus, and severe headaches. Not sure if it's related...benign tumor removed under ear.

The pulmonary specialist I'm seeing thinks it's pulmonary hypertension caused from pulmonary fibrosis but the cause is still unknown.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm waiting to have a stress echo and may be a heart catheterization test afterwards. Any information to give the pulmonary hypertension specialist at the Heart Hospital would be quite helpful!

If the saturation is 94% or less then you should be worried, that means somthing is wrong with your lungs. actually saturation 94 or less people lare unconchest or at least confused and not clear mind thinking or talking. The 96% - 100% is normal range .Some times you can gat Sat 94% or lower if your fingers are very cold ore you have thick color on them ,you have to warm fingers in room temp and remove the color from nails to measure saturation correct.

My oxygen saturation levels at rest range from 99-96%, it's when I get up from sitting or start walking they drop below 92%. (even when getting up from laying down)

During the stress tests they drop below 90% and I haven't worn nail polish in years so I don't believe that to be the cause. My hands and feet are always really cold and have been my whole life. They always turn dark red and purple.
However, all of saturation levels are taken at the doctors office. I don't have an oximeter at home, so I don't believe it to be something I'm doing wrong.

Near the top of the screen, to the left of "Post a Poll" is the "Post New Topic" button.

Hit that and then type your new post title and text.
