I've started my child on Azithromycin, to be followed within the next couple of days with Mepron. The side effects listed under Azithromycin states that hearing loss can occur.
This is freaking me out. I'm already nervous about putting these drugs into her body.
Does anyone know anything further about this? Is this temporary hearing loss or permanent?
One of my daughter's fears is losing her hearing, so reading this has made me even more concerned.
Prior to Azithromycin, she took Doxy. She had ringing in her ears at night before taking the Doxy, but the Doxy and/or diet changes made the ringing go away.
Is there another drug without this as a side effect that can be taken with Mepron to kill Babesiosis?
Any words of advice or tips on how to be aware of these risks, please post.
Thank you!

If you take NAC before you begin treatment, this might offer some protection.
Ringing of the ears is one sign of ototoxicity so don't try to tolerate it if that becomes troublesome. Abx that can be most ototoxic to the ears are minocycline, azithromycin and Biaxin.
You can read more about that -and what can help here:
Topic: TINNITUS: Ringing Between The Ears; Vestibular, Balance, Hearing with compiled links
======
You can search PubMed for medical abstracts. Cross reference the drug name with "hearing" "deafness" and "ototoxic"
While this can be a result, it is not always the case. Again, if tinnitus or hyperacusis result from a medicine, that is one sign that you might need to switch or all liver support which can decrease the toxicity to the ears.
Lyme, untreated, can also cause deafness. It's just hard to find the meds that work just right for each individual.

I can totally understand your apprehension, as this is something I have concerns about as well.
Overall, I've been doing very well with my lyme treatment, which is why I'm not here much anymore. I'm not "cured" but I'm pretty much back to normal and I have my llmd to thank for that.
For a number of months I pulsed with doxy/diflucan combination. It worked really well and after being off meds for five weeks I am now starting a course of zith/mepron. I am on a half-dose of this for the first ten days, and then I go up to a full dose after that.
I have tried zith before and it did cause ear-ringing which concerned me so I stopped. I have hopes now that my bacterial load is much lower and that any ear-ringing I may get will be substantially less.
I understand the frustration, because it's so difficult to know if the ear ringing is from the lyme/babesia or from the meds. I spoke at length with my llmd about this exact issue at my last appointment and he helped allay a lot of my anxiety about this. I don't want to downplay the zith/hearing loss concern--it's real and it's valid. But if you haven't already, I suggest you spell your concerns out with your daughter's llmd. He may be able to give you some peace of mind. Mine certainly was able to--at least for now!
Good luck and I'll keep your daughter in my prayers.

I had to stop zith due to ear ringing.
My daughter took malarone with amoxi.
She is allergic to zith.
It is hard with very young children.
I am not sure they would even notice or know
How to explain the "ringing" sound.
Hugs,
