I am taking Nystatin as I always have with abx.

My LLMD recommended Florastor when I began with him last summer but since I still had Nystatin I continued with that. It seems they cannot be taken together.

I am questioning if I should stop the Nystatin and start the Florastor? Is one better than the other?

I have had no problems so far with Nystatin, so I am hesitant to change and would like to hear of others experiences.

Thank you.

You need to read up about candida and yeast.

Nystatin will kill yeast but it will kill your benefical flora as well as will ABX and it will cause intestinal dysbiosis leaving you in a worse predicament.

The only way to avoid yeast and Candida is to observe a strict yeast free diet, take your nystatin and ABX two to three hours away from your benefical flora or else it will kill it.

There is lots of information in this thread:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/1/78658?

Florastor is only one of the beneficial bacterial found in the gut. You need to take an additional more comprehensive probiotic with all the essential strains it it, as well, that include Lactobacillis and bifidobactium. There are many brands on the market. The kinds that require refrigeration are the best.

And they need to be in the multi billion range. Here is a link where some of this has been discussed. Diflucan is also more effedtive than nystatin as it penetrates thru the intestine killing the roots of candida.

Nystatin does not so it does not fully do the job. It will not get to yeast circulating in your blood stream.

I have not read this yet but it looks like it might have some good info: http://www.chiro.org/nutrition/Acidophilus.shtml#Causes_of_Intestinal_Dysbiosis

I started taking Florastor on a recommendation when I was a month or so into my abx protocal. I got really sick all my symptoms were so much worse I stopped taking it and I was better. So for me Florastor was a no no.

But alot of people love it. Personally I take Diflucan when I feel as though I am having yeast problems but on an everyday basis I make sure to take really good Probiotics and I take Olive Leaf Extract too.

Good luck to you.

Melissa

I take three different kinds of probiotics.

I do take Florastor, but I only added that after my doc started me on Clindamycin and then Florastor became a MUST.

So I take three diff. probiotics a couple times a day. I think the more the better, but that's just me.

Florastor is not meant to be taken alone without other probiotic strains, that is probably why it

didn't work for you. It is only one strain:
Saccharomyces boulardii and works mainly in preventing diarrhea and c diff. In order to be

effective, since ABX and Anti fungals are killing off all of your beneficial flora you have to replace all the strains that normally occur in the body.

It's that simple to explain but harder to achieve in reality due to many other circumstances, such as the quality of your probiotics, how diligent you are in taking them, other factors going on in your gut, other medications that wreck havoc on the gut, bad diet and not following an anti yeast diet.

Same with Culturelle. It only contains Lactobacilus not the full spectrum of beneficial flora that occurs in the GI tract. You can't be killing off what nature provided with ABX and anti fungals but only replace some of it. You

need to replace all of the strains in huge amounts frequency as it's hard to repopulate since you are continuing to kill most of it off with ABX and anti fungals. It's a catch 22 and something you need to be very devoted to doing.

Florastor works well in conjunction with a well verified probiotic. So many of the probiotics are not telling the exact truth about what is or is not in them. Florastor is one of the most recommened by LLD's as are several others. It has what it says it has. Ask your doc.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I am taking three different types of refrigerated probiotics already. I know I could be better about taking them more often.

Just wondering where can you purchase Florastor? I have only found it online so far.
