Hi everyone. Been treating babesia duncani for a total of 8 months now.

I did 3 consecutive months with a combo. of Malarone and 4tsp of Mepron. I tried to come off and had some problems so one month later went back on.

This time I am on Mepron 4sp daily and at times I alternate with 5tabs of Malerone. I now have been treating for 4 months (this time)

I am also treating the lyme.

Does anyone have an idea how long treatment continues before you can wean off the stuff?

Was hoping someone could shed some light.

Many Thanks!

Hey! You may want to talk to your doctor about adding a supplement/herb called Artemitisin it works REALLY well with Mepron the two together cause major herxing but it's work it. Also considering adding a antibiotic such as zithromax to the cocktail.

Good luck! (i've been treating babesia for a long time too, it's awful)

My LLMD says minimum 10 months of tx for this strain. Most do longer. I see Dr B is now saying minimum 5 months of tx (this may be for microti, not sure).

Burrascano says the regimen of choice for babs is a combo of Mepron or Malarone plus an erythromycin-type drug, such as zith, Biaxin, or Ketek in standard doses. Artemesia should be added in all cases.

I know a number of people who cleared their babs with Mepron, zith and then eventually adding in the art as per Burrascano. Took about 8 months.

So, if you are not on an erythromycin-type drug, in addition to the Mepron/Malarone, I don't think you are going to have success. After about 4 or 5 months on that combo, if you are not feeling too sick, it is time to add the art. Do that for a few months.

You will be treating forever if your treatment is not aggressive enough.

Burrascano says length of tratment depends on things like degree of infection, duration of illness before diagnosis, the health and immune status of the patient, and whether the patient is coinfected with lyme. So, you see, there is no simple answer to the question. It all depends!

You can read this for yourself on pages 22-23 of the document. Link is:

I would definitely add the artemisinin as others have mentioned above. My children's LLMD, the famous Dr. J in CT told me that in some cases the duncani can be resistant to Mepron, so the artemisinin is essential.

Hope this helps. My children are on it along with the Mepron and azithromycin. I agree also about adding the erythromycin type drug, as that is what my children are on and they are making progress. Not sure if they have the duncani strain, however.

You should pulse the artemisinin. There are several different approaches. My kids take it 4 days on, then 3 days off.

thanks everyone. I am taking biaxin and omnicef along with the Mepron 4 tsp. daily. It seems I have made some progress.

Just wondering if anyone ever gets rid of babesia duncani.

I did try artemesia just about one year ago for a brief time. I had some irregular heart beats. My doctor at the time told me to stop and started me alternating with high dose malarone. Maybe I should try it again.

I do have a question for amanda. do you feel like you are making progress on this regime?
And how sick were you before you started treating?

Are people able to get off the stuff eventually.

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for the info. I guess I will have to keep at it a bit longer. Did you say you tried artemesia?

I wonder why your WBC's keep dropping. Have you ever tried a product called immunopro. Its a whey protien with gammaglobulins and is felt by many to help support your immune system. It really helped me because at one point I had a IGG subclass deficiency 1 and 2. It brought my levels back to normal. I wonder if this would in some way help your wbc's. It also might help your cd-57. Transfer factors are also helpful I believe. But I've heard great things about immunopro.

Its interesting because my eopinophils have been up for 4 years and they are just starting to fall to a normal range. I had a bone marrow done. No problem there so it must be the babs.
Have you ever monitored your ECP? Mine is very high.

Well I hope you continue with your improvement. Maybe if you boost your immune system a bit you may be able to come off Mepron.

Also one other thought. Have you ever came off Mepron and taken one Malerone a day for maintenance. I know Dr. H advises people to do that instead of coming off completely. He feels it keeps it at bay

Many thanks!!
Best of Luck!

Katrina
