my 4 year old started rifampin a couple of weeks ago. For the first week or so, his urine turned orange. Now it doesn't appear to be changing color.

Did anyone have this happen or is this a sign it's not being absorbed or something?

Thanks,

tickbattler

I noticed that the color of my urine varied while I was in Rifampin. I worried about the same thing but it seems that it was absorbed OK as it worked very well for me.

Are you getting your son checked regularly for Liver issues? My Liver enzymes went through the roof and I had to go off Rifampin after five weeks.

If you take it in the AM, but the evening most of the color is gone. I don't know how he is taking it. It does lessen until the next dose.

Thanks all. I will make sure his liver is checked on Friday at our next appt.

He takes it twice a day. I'm wondering if it has something to do with whether he takes it with food.

The first week I was really good with giving it before his meals and the past few days we were traveling and I often gave it with meals. Perhaps that might be why it's not appearing in his urine as much.

Tickbattler,

I am taking IV Rifampin but before my LLMD put me on that, he had me taking a week of orals to see if I could tolerate the medication.

After the FIRST pill, I got that orangish red urine. I know on the pharmacy write up, they even warned about soft contact lenses while taking this medication since it would stain even those.

BUT as you said, with me too, the orange has basically settled down. For me, it happened even before the full week of orals and now, even with IV, it's minor compared to how it started.

My doctor does test my blood weekly, but has been doing that since I started IV's back in the summer.

Still though, you do want to make sure that the kidney tests are being run so they know ahead of time if your four year old is having a problem.

So far, my blood work is coming back fine, but I understand it can happen rather quickly. Good luck.

Sometimes my urine is bright orange sometimes it's not and looks normal.

but mostly orange in the morning. normal in evening.

I have no idea why.

But seems to still be working great for me these last 4 months.

I believe that urine should be orange for a few hours after taking until it flushes out through the kidneys.

I know it is important to take on an empty stomach. Perhaps it is combining with the food & not being processed properly. ???

I also know that there can be issues with starting/stopping Rifampin, I wonder if they would occur if someone wasn't actually getting the proper dosage because of food interfering.

I would think this would be good to ask the pharmacist or doctor about.

is it herxing or ??? Please help

I started Rifampin for about 10 days now, 300mg 2x/day. Also been on plaquinel/Biaxin for a month.

When I was on Paquinel/ Biaxin, i was feeling fine.

3-4 days after i started Rifampin, I felt so much worsen.

I started getting really tired everyday, sleepy, burning sensation, pin & needle all over body, included hands and feet. Also Joint pain on shoulders, arms, and hands.

Plus, pain and pressure under both armpits, pain and ache all over body and occasionally headache, numbness and weaken in legs. Pain in the middle of my back.

Today, i get a mild rash on right cheek underneath the eye, and pain in the groin that come and go.

Do anyone know if this is herxing? or something else? Thanks All.

Hey there Inc2000,

I would check with my doctor, if what was happening to you, happened to me,

for an allergic reaction, to whatever it is you're taking at this time!

Possible cross reaction?

No one here would be able to diagnose your present problems....

seek your llmd's advice, or an ER somewhere, or at LEAST your pharmacist!

I've never experienced a rash on my face before,

with any medications, in my past lyme treatments....

I did however experience a bullseye rash, when I received my first IV Abx...on my tummy!

Could it be a HERX? Sure! However, like I said above, check it out with your doctor!
