My 18 year old son tested positive for Lyme and RMSF in September 20008 and put on 8 weeks of doxy 300 mg. When retested in November, he was negative. His doc took him off antibiotics and he got sick a few weeks later.
She clinically diagnosed him with Babesia and treated him for a month with Meprom/Zith Jan 2009 but wouldn't give out any more antibiotics.
We went to see a new LLMD. When retested after that in February his titers for RMSF were up to 1:64. Retested in March they are now 1:128.
The new LLMD says RMSF is back and we must retreat it. How is that possible?
Has this happened to anyone else? Could the test be a false positive?

all i know from what i have learned about myself and now hubby is, if during tx for the RMSF antibodies are not made by body to form significant igg response then the infection is still laying around, untreated waiting for time to pop its head back out.
anyone else on this?? i may not be fully understanding myself, but this is waht was the explanation of sorts for me.
LLMD thinks i have had this over 9 yrs more like 11+. ok, with that in mind i only test + to RMSF Igm at very high titer but 0 IGg response. so, for possible over 11 yrs my body has not attempted to build up igg response to attack this itself.
now i am entering month 9 of tx, would be interesting to see if have Igg yet. i have broke out in weird rashes lately, went to pcp iwth it. she had no idea what it was. LLMD is 5hr away, so getting there didnt happen (brain stuff bad, so i dont drive out of our little neighborhood area ) but, after loking up pic i really this it may have been a RMSF rash. will be asking LLMD at next appt
hubby also just tested + for RMSF, we got results over the phone so not sure if he is igm only like me or had some igg?? we will get copies of labs next visit.
have not found many here with "chronic" RMSF, seems it is an odd thing when that occurs because the initial infection is so severe and can be life threatining if not tx.

Well my hubby just tested positive for it and he has had Lyme, babs and bart for ten years. No one ever tested him before for RMSF. So assumably, he has been walking around with it for ten years.
He believes this is why he was so deathly ill in the beginning with Lyme, that it was primarily the RMSF. He was a huge athlete and ate impeccably well, so his immune system must have gotten him through at the time with the poor treatment he eventually got.

I had rmsf 17 years ago. of course i've been dealing with lyme symptoms starting a few years after that, though only found out that's what it was 2.5. years ago.
Then, I find out today that the rmsf is not gone.
there is no way to convey my feelings at this moment. However, I'm sad to think that you all get it without me even trying.
I just wish it would all go away. I'm so tired of these stinking bacteria. I will never give in or up... However, I will rejoice the day I leave this mortal body.. In the meantime, I praise my God daily for how great he is...

For what it is worth...
I got RMSF. Not treated properly at the time... very severe case.
I finally was treated years later. Felt better. Stopped treatment.
It came back. Treated again.
It came back.
Then I also was tested for Ehrlichiosis. It was positive.
I had a rash at the time and was very ill.
I seem to relapse with it each year after a few months of treating it and stopping.
I will post some info from an older file on it on another post in Medical.
