Hi-

How long do you need to stay in a sauna to reap the detox benefits? I have limited time during the day.

Thanks!

We would need to know what kind of sauna you are discussing. Are you talking the traditional sauna's in most gyms, a far infrared sauna or an infared sauna?

I know they usually tell you to start out slowly no matter which kind you are using.

I have a far infrared and I believe I started out with about 20 minutes and have worked my way up to an hour.

Your body has to be your best tool for figuring out when you have had enough.

It's great for detoxing, so I hope it works out very well for you.

Thanks, Cathy, it's a regular gym sauna. I have been doing about 10 minutes, so I'll bump it up a bit.

No, this gym has just a regular sauna. But I have tried the infrared, and it is really odd.

How can you tell if it is working?

youre right, I think the infrared is odd.

I like the heat, it feels nice!

I also sweat too in a regular sauna.

Though people swear that in a regular sauna the sweat is mostlly water and in infrared its mostlly toxins.

I dont know about that!

Im ready to pay $300 for a gym with a regualr sauna again. I simply cant work out still!!!!!!

And I need to sweat.

Well, here's the abstract:

Go to Pubmed and type in the # above to read the recommended heat setting and time.

Wow...that is HOT!

Athin, don't they have those swimming covers? That might help. But it still might be dangerous with the Picc. I'm not sure.

For people who live in NYC/NJ area there's an amazing Korean sauna in or near Palisades Park, NJ. There's also one in Queens but I never got to go there.

http://www.ekingsauna.com/ - NJ

http://nyinspaworld.com/eng/main/main.php - Queens

They have about 5 different kinds of saunas, steam rooms, hot & cold tubs, etc. One or 2 have FIR.

They probably have these sort of thing in CA, too - or in places where there are alot of Korean folks. I did a search on google & found one in the Atlanta, GA area...

Check this out - http://www.jejusauna.net/

It's really an experience!

Some public places give you a little cotton outfit (shorts & a tee shirt). Don't wear anything with chemically produced fabrics, like polyester, spandex, etc. - just cotton. I don't think alittle elastic in the waistband is bad but it's best to try to avoid that.

If I had my own sauna, I would just be naked with a towel to sit or lay on & to catch sweat.

It probably depends on the person as to how long... I guess as long as you can comfortably bear it. No need to push yourself. When you get more used to it, you can stay in longer.

You may want to take a cold shower or plunge right after. It's part of the experience.

I find if I can work out before the sauna, at least 20 min. of aerobic type exercise or power walking to get my heart rate up over 120, to about 140, then I shower to open the pores, rub sea salt on my body in the shower and leave it on in the sauna and if the sauna is pre heated, it then only takes about 10 minutes for me to get the full benefit of a detox in a regular sauna.

I get immediate deep sweating.

If my body is not heated from exercise, it could take 45 minutes for the same effect for me.

I use a sauna at the local YMCA. But I am seriously considering getting a Far infrared for my home,as I do seem to feel great after the saunas, and can't always get the the Y!

that sounds about right, buster do you have a sauna?

And I cant help but see that your in mississippi, everything is cheaper down there.

The opposite is true up here, things are expensive and people are rude. I wish I were in the south.

Lymeparfait - why do your use salt on your body?

The Korean sauna place has one with salt. It's always very popular.

Everything is soooo much cheaper in the south. I just moved here from NJ...

I think the new Golds Gym with a big pool, sauna, everything, etc. is about $30 a month.

I have a Sunlight sauna and I love it. I am in it about 5 times a week for 30 minutes each. I do a quick lymph brushing before I go in and I sweat faster. My kids go in too. In the gym sauna I did up to 45 minutes. Took me FOREVER to sweat.

I miss the gym sauna for the social aspect (I live in a really small community in a big city), but I love having my own.

I had a scholarship to the Y for awhile. YM was better than YW for cost.
