Hi everyone,

I saw my new LLMD last weekend and she strongly felt that I am magnesium deficient. I have not been on treatment for a few months. My palpitations and tachycardia have been pretty bad. She decided to give me a magnesium injection in her office and send me home with a script to give myself injections once a week.

Now here is the weird part....
After she gave me the shot, I instantly became relaxed as if I had taken Xanax and my heart calmed down. It was the strangest feeling. As the week went by, my heart got worse and worse. I did not take any oral magnesium at all during the week because I could not remember if I was to take oral magnesium also or not.

Yesterday my heart was really bad. It was just pounding and the tachycardia was bad. Last night was time for another shot. After the shot I felt relaxed again and the heart symptoms stopped. No palpitations since. The tachycardia has also calmed down.

Why am I having this reaction to a shot of magnesium? Am I really that depleted that a shot of magnesium takes away anxiety, relaxes me, and calms down my heart? I felt great last night after the shot. It was so amazing. Is this normal or why would I feel like this?

Blue,

Glad to hear you are feeling better!

I do believe mag is supposed to calm the heart down. Not really sure why tho.

I just bought some myself for similar issues. (thumps and skips)

What brand of oral mag did she recommend?

I bought a citrate by SOLGAR that 2 tabs = 400 mg. Havent opened it yet though. Some people recommended Nature's Calm, but I didnt like the taste of it.

Most Americans are already deficient in magnesium and then Lyme robs us of it further that's why it's crucial that we supplement with it.

You are right on. A IM mag shot is better than taking Valium and much better for you. I still take them. It totally relaxes your muscles in a way that oral mag cannot.

Hopefully one of the more scientific folks
like Marnie will come along and tell you
why the Mag. helps to much in more techincally
terms.

From her postings it is said that Mag.
is depleted by 70% I beleive when
we are fist infected.

Many hospitals use Mag. IV for heart patients
and even to stop pre-term labor.

We need Mag. and Potassium for our hearts
to work properly.

I have taken oral Mag in high doses
and it has the same effect you mentioned.

Sounds like your LLMD was correct.

Gem -

She did not recommend a certain brand so I am not sure what type of orals I should take considering my calcium is close to being high. I do not think a magnesium with calcium would be good for me at all. I have Mag-tab SR and a few other brands here at home.

I had labs done on Wednesday and my calcium was 10.3. A normal range is 8.5 to 10.5. So as you can see, my calcium is up there.

Also, they checked my magnesium level. It was 2.1 with a normal range being 1.3 - 2.1. This was 4 days after the magnesium shot.

I am really confused. I have no idea if I am really deficient or not. I do not want to be taking too much.

I have read that magnesium deficiency causes increased levels of adrenaline, which can lead to a feeling of anxiety. I always notice that when I wake up from sleeping, my heart is racing. It is as if someone gave me a shot of adrenaline. I am just so confused and do not know what to think.

Magnesium glycinate by Pure Encapsulations is excellent. It's pharmaceutical grade and has no fillers. Metagenics is also very good. You want a

first tier brand marketed toward doctors, not the junk off label brands.

Thank you Abxnomore.

All my supplements are by Pure Encapsulations. I was hoping I could get mag by them as well.

Hey Blue,

Wow, that's great that the magnesium helped you so much! I'm glad you'll be able to work on it to be corrected.

I just wanted to say that often the blood mag levels will appear to be in the normal range. Lyme brain here, but I'm thinking the reason is because Mag is concentrated more in the muscles so even if your blood mg levels are fine, you may still very well be low in magnesium and if the IM mg helped, then I think that seems like a pretty good sign that you are depleted in it.

Keep us posted if this resolves your heart issues for you, I really hope it does, you've been dealing with it for a long time!

Take care,
Ocean

Thank you Ocean!

I know the serum levels are not to be that accurate and do not give you any clue as to what is in your tissues, etc. I just do not want to be pumping all this mag if I truly do not need it. Excess mag is filtered out by the kidneys and I was born with only one. So that is a concern for me.

The strange thing is I think the mag either made me herx last week or I had a flare. My temp is higher than normal, sweating palms and feet, anxiety, etc. As the week went on, my heart got worse and worse and so did the anxiety. I am just trying to figure out if the mag caused a herx that I am still in or of I am flaring.

The IM mag shot did help and my heart is calmer this morning. Now if only my butt was not so sore! [lol]

BLUE- I really doubt that you have to worry about taking too much magnesium. Lyme eats most of it anyway.

I take oral mag every day and IM shots (2cc mag sulfate) 2x a week for years. There is a big difference between

what an IM shot does vs oral. Oral does not get deep into your muscles and many of us lymies need that because of muscle problems.

Good. Those shots will really help you. I put B complex and B 12 in with my mag.

Good luck.

I have oral B-complex and D3 by Pure Encapsulations. I tried it once and it tore up my stomach pretty bad. I think I need to take it with a ton of food. I think B anemia is another issue for me that I am trying to work on. My MCV and MCH are always elevated, although it is getting better.

Thanks for all of your help!

As long as you are doing IM shots ask your LLMD if you can put b complex and b12 in with the mag. I also put in some procaine. That way it won't bother your stomach and it works much better that way, just as the mag does.

Also, Biotics Bio D Mulsion Forte is a thick liquid D3 drop (2,000 IU) which is much more bio absorable than capsules. You may want to try that. You need to take it with fatty food as it is a fat soluble vitamin. Actually, vitamin D is a hormone.

I have used it but it can't compare to the effect of IM mag shots. It's good to rub on sore muscles for a temporary fix or even better to soak your feet in.

"Natural Calm" helps me a ton -- I take it every day!!! The Raspberry Lemon flavor is my favorite.

My sister in law went in for her b12 shot and asked about magnesium shots. She was told they don't do those anymore because they found that they harm the heart. She said something about an extra heart beat or something...

I've never heard or that. I don't believe that to be true. I've been taking them for over eight years and have never had any heart trouble. In fact, from what I know it is good for your heart.
