Hi

I was treated for chronic lyme for a year and half before i became pregnant with my son, who is now 4. I did take amoxy while prego, but have some concerns about my son. I also still had symptoms while I was pregnant.

My son is now 4, he is diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, attention problems, sensory processing disorder, impulsiveness, mood swings, anger problems and has sensitivity to lights and sounds.
Extremely smart, verbal skills above normal.
Had acid reflux as an infant and colic.

I always had in the back of mind, could he have lyme? I tested him through Questrecently, which i know stinks, he was neg. Did test positive for band 41 and 66.

I am now testing him through Igenex, where i was diagnosed several years ago.

Anyone have any insight into my story? I know this could all be related to his disorder, but i cant help wonder.
Thanks, this has been eating me up.
Tracey

Most likely you passed heavy metals, candida from your lyme treatment with antibiotics. If he does have lyme, it is not the main problem, but a contributing factor.

you can work on detoxing him. Research the protocol for mercury detox for autism. Also a primary concern is getting his gut flora inline. HIs immune system will get much better with a good probiotic.

Check out Dr. K's protocol for autism.

Work on those two things first! There's many resources for help now!

It is beleived my two sons may have gotten it from me during the birthing/breastfeeding process when I didn't realize I had Lyme. My younger son had many attention issues, hyper, sleep issues, rashes, infections, etc. After havign many tests done through Quest and PCRs through MDL I finally took them to Dr. J and on the first Igenex Western Blot they were both CDC positive for the Lyme. In your case it sounds like it may well be passed on also with coinfections too if you have them (as was in my case).

Please I urge you to seek some Ignex tests for your child and if you think he may be positive seek treatment options quickly. I wish I had done Igenex quicker and maybe my kids would have been caught quicker. Kids can bounce back faster than adults so the sooner you get it, so please follow thorugh- you will never regret it.

My second sons IG jumped 20 points after a year of treatment. He is in a gifted program at school, a star athlete- all things he never was 3 year ago.

Tracey,

I have chronic Lyme and am pregnant.

My LLMD recommended I buy this "special issue" of a Lyme magazine that is all about children and Lyme. I am really glad I ordered it.

It has good information in it....studies by well-known Lyme doctors, etc. It also has articles describing what symptoms are seen in children.

There is a long article in there by Dr. J too.

It cost $10, but it was well worth the price.

Here is a link to where you can buy it (I am not affiliated with this group and do not make money through this, etc):

http://www.lymedisease.org/lyme_times/issues/lyme_times_issues_children.html

It does sound like maybe your child has Lyme, but with treatment, a lot of those symptoms can go away. Children seem to recover really well. You need to treat ASAP though....I have heard it is most successful before they are 5 years old.

Do you mind if I ask if you breastfed? I am still on the fence as to whether I should or not.

Tracey,

My son, who is 4 has many of the same symptoms as your son. I didn't know I had lyme when I was pregnant, so no abx. He has a very low CDC57, but haven't done igenex testing. Our LLMD doesn't see the need to treat agressively, and I agree. However, after we did a homeopathic remedy his sensory issues, anger issues, stutter and more disappear, or lightened significantly.

My older son we are treating agressively. He is igenex positive.

There is a lot of controversy about whether or not band 41 on it's own is highly indicative of lyme, but I agree with many LLMD's who believe that it is.

I was SO tired of all the psych tests and psych therapy. I knew it was biological. Yes, heavy metals can play a part, but co-infects and lyme can do a number on that sensory processing stuff.

I'm sorry you are here. . but there is so much hope! I have the kids started on transfer factor as of today. I'll check in later with more information as we progress!

They are not lyme-specific bands. They will show up with Lyme, but other things can cause them. How many other things? Not sure.

However, because of the symptoms, to me it sounds like your child could have Lyme. I would wait and see what Igenex says.

If you still only get bands 41 and 66 and nothing else from Igenex, those bands are not enough on their own to PROVE Lyme.

But I would consider his symptoms, and if to you it seems like Lyme, I would treat under the care of a good Lyme doc, because you know he could have been exposed to it.

He could still have Lyme and just not be showing many bands.

The doctor at Igenex will tell you something different. They will say that band 41 IS lyme specific. That's what they told my LLMD. That is why she was willing to treat me. I am ONLY band 41 positive.

Having a child with the lyme is NOT the end of the world, but the older they get without treatment the more violent they can become (that's what I've seen anyway).

Our igenex tests took about a week, from what I remember.

tracey, we used to have an active member here whose son was almost identical to YOUR son.

she finally got him to dr. c in s. missouri, and she told me later, "betty, i finally got to MEET my son after 7 years"! he had started coming out of the asperger's, etc.

she hasn't posted in years; her entire family has lyme.

CHILDREN'S LYME SYMPTOMS compiled by Geneal 6-07
From ``GENEAL'' June 2007

I have been doing some research regarding Lyme and signs/symptoms in small children.

I know many of you have small children that you may be concerned about.
I believe my youngest child (4yrs old) may have gotten this disease from me.

For All Children

-dizziness
-neck pain and stiffness in almost 90%
-sore throats
-swollen lymph nodes
-excessive thirst,
-Chest pains in at least 70%, some have palpatations
-Sense of air hunger or shortness of breath, dry cough

-abdominal pain in about 50%, can mimic acute appendicitis
-sometimes vomiting, heartburn
-rashes that come and go, malar rashes, new psoriasis

-migratory arthralgias, joing pain in 50% to 100%
-myalgias in over 80%, back ache, morning stiffness, pain at rest, muscle weakness

-frequent illnessses, dark circles under their eyes
-intermittent red, hot pinnae of ears
-sleep disturbance in over 80%

-Neurological symptoms are protean and can appear AT ANY TIME during the course of infection
*hypersensitivity of skin, scalp and hair
*Hypersensitivity to noise, light, smell
*Alterations of taste
*poor balance and coordination
*Uncharacteristic behavior outbursts, mood disturbances, depression
*social withdrawal
*New onset phobias
*Oppositional behaviors
*Obsessive compulsive disorders
*Deterioration in school performance in over 90%
*Difficulty with concentration and attention in school with easily distractibility as well as "brain fog" in over 80%
*New onset of ADD

*When measured with formal neuropsychiatric testing, children demonstrate defects in auditory and visual sequential processing

Less Commonly:

*Movement disorders-spaticity, ataxia, motor or vocal tics
*Cranial neuropathies, e.g. Bell's Palsy or optic nerve neuritis
*Peripheral neuropathies-numbness and tingling, distal parathesias, subtle weakness

Pre-Schoolers and toddlers

- Modd swings, sudden emotional outbursts
- Irritabiity
- Personality changes
- Regression of motor and social skills (developmental milestones)
- Changes in play behavior, tire easily, less active

- Trouble falling asleep, frequent awakenings
- Nightmares, new phobias, recurrence of seperation anxiety
- Diaper rash unresponsive to normal treatment
- Frequent URI's, ear and throat infections, bronchitis, pneumonia

Congenital Lyme Disease

* Infants can be infected with Borrelia transpacentally in any stage of pregnancy and/or via mother's breast milk.

* The co-infections: Babesia, Bartonella, Mycoplasma and perhaps even the Ehrilichias can be transmitted transpacentally to the developing fetus.

* Gestational Borreliosis can be associated with repeated miscarriages, fetal death in utero, still births, hydrocephalus, cardiovascual anomalies,

intrauterine growth retardation, neonatal respiratory distress, and maternal toxemia of pregnancy.

* Infants either infected congenitally or from breast milk can have

- Floppiness with poor muscle tone
- Irritability
- Frequent fevers and illness early in life
- Joint sensitivities and body pain
- Skin sensitivity
- Gastro esophageal reflux
- Developmental delays
-Learning disabilities and psychiatric problems

Infants infected congentially can have

-Small windpipes (tracheomalacia)
- Eye problems (cataracts)
- Heart defects

* Infants bitten very early in life will have many of the same symptoms
- loss and decline in developmental milestones.

I found this to be a pretty inclusive list of signs/symptoms for small children, infants, and those suspected of congenital Lyme.

Sadly, my two children do exhibit many of these symptoms and both have positive bands for Lyme via Igenex diagnostic lab in PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA. Geneal, 2007

I have 2 boys that I believe got Lyme from me too.

You described my youngest (who is 10) when you described your son. He also has Aspergers and everything else you listed.

We tested them both with Igenex and I was disappointed in the test results. They only found a few positive nd IND bands. Not even enough to say Igenex positive.

We even tried the PCR test with urine and it was negative. Yet they have symptoms. My youngest has more then my oldest.

They did test positive for Mycoplasma and many viruses. So we are treating them with abx based off symptoms.

I have had both serious lyme and coinfections and molds, yeast, and fungal systemic infections.

From this I am beginning to learn that many people have both, and often one is confused for the other.

Treatment becomes tricky, as antibiotics for lyme can increase fungal issues, and cause retention of metals.

In this case I would start with checking for larger parasites, then detoxing of metals and molds, then move on to lyme treatment.

Most children with autism spectrum disorders imrove tremendously from a strict anti-allergy diet.

Dr. K. says that first children usually carry a high load of heavy metals and fungals, which cause autism.

He says autism in later children is usually lyme-related.

Incidently, I gave birth to two children, while heavily lyme infected, and breast fed each for three years. Neither of them test positive for lyme through microscopy blood test or energetic testing, although both have some mild lyme-type symptoms.

Recently I began treating our house for mold, and their symptoms are decreasing.

I imagine that an antibody test might show up positive, but I believe in our case that breast feeding gave them some antibodies against lyme, rather than giving them the infection.
