I've been on Doxycycline for about a year and a half now to treat my Lyme symptoms, because unfortunately I seem to be able to tolerate very few kinds of medication. Recently I had a bad flareup of my symptoms; I'm not sure if it was a herx reaction or perhaps due to retriggering of benzodiazapine withdrawl symptoms because of alcohol use. My question is, does the Lyme bacteria become resistant to antibiotic therapy, or could the Doxycycline still have some effect after this amount of time? Thanks for any input...

Hi Bitrex - Please explain in what way you can't tolerate other kinds of medication? Do you have an allergic reaction - or Do you have gastro - intestional issues?
Are you seeing a LLMD (Lyme Literate MD)?
If you have allergic reactions be sure to sit down and list all antibiotics (abx) which have given you problems in the past.
Group them according to which ones belong in the same abx family.
This way you can look for abx belonging to a different pharmacology group than the others. You may be able to change abx to a different group without problems.
If your problems have been gastro-intestional, then I'd say a good Internist MD would be worth while. Investigate possible ulceration, other bacteria or physical problems.
Study different herbal protocol - regardless of what abx you are on, herbs and vitamins to boost your immunity to fight the disease are vital.
Did you get tested for co-infections?
What are your symptoms after a year and half of treatment?
I believe I have read that this bacteria - like all other bacteria will develop a resistance to a single abx in time. How long on one abx - I don't know.
Sounds like you need a change.
