Ok, so we had our 1st appt with Dr. J yesterday, for the first time in a year, I feel we have him on the right road to recovery. Dr. J is also testing him for co-infections.
Although our appt was 2.5 hours I forgot to ask about the thing that scares me the most. Herxing.
He did mention herxing, but then we got distracted (my son started vomiting) and I didn't go back and ask more questions when the crisis ended.
First of all, how badly did your children herx?
How long did it last?
What can you do (or take) to help a herx be less severe?
How did your child cope with herxing?
My son is 6. He started him on 250mg zithromax and 300mg omnicef? (I think that's what it is, can't read his writing, lol). He'll take one in the morning after breakfast & then the other after supper. He'll also be taking acidopholis during the day.
Meds might change depending on the outcome of his labs and how he tolerates it.
I'm also considering holding off on starting treatment until school lets out in June.

My son has been in treatment for a year now..he's 10. When he started on Omnicef he had headaches, very tired, achey all over, and also suffered from surges of depression. The same thing with Zith, also. So if's he's herxing at least you know you are on the right track..
It's very hard though watching them suffer.. I am sorry you are having to go through this too.

I started my son right away on abx. He was 10 (almost 11) at the time. I made the Ped. give us Amoxcy until we could get to an LLMD. I knew what it was when he started to have acute symptoms (anxiety, neck stiffness, insomnia, headaches, muscle twitches).
Then we saw Dr J a few months later and he up the Amoxcy and added Zith. (he was also on Plaquenil and Nystatin-preventative). We also had him on lots of good pro-biotics. 50 plus per day and S. Boulardii too.
My son did great on this protocol. With in months all his acute symptoms were gone. We never knew when he was bit and I suspect it was over a year before we treated.
The herxes are different for everyone so just be aware. My son's were mild and some emotional stuff and a few headaches ect... The turn around was well worth it.
Hang in there, We see Dr J too.

My children started at age 5 and 4.
For them it was more behavioral than anything else.
Like losing their ability to not over react to little things.
Lots of crying, screaming, throwing, etc.
Like a really bad tantrum that is uncharacteristic.

my youngest got a rash on his arms for his herx. The same rash I got on my thighs a week after starting Mino. I got the same thing on my arm a few days after I started Riocephin.
My kids were 3 and 6 when treated for 60 days of Ceftin.
They were not Lyme symptomatic at the time they were diagnosed. I had them tested AFTER I got diagnosed. They tested EXACTLY the same way.
So because they are so little, they might not have known what was or is a "unusual" feeling.
I'll be in VA this summer for a few months and thinking of taking a trip up to CT and see Dr J.
