I have gotten something in my eye, it is swollen, red and itchy beyond compare Ive been to two eye doctors both said I need prednisone eye drops. BUT im scared to use any kind of steroid even if its just in my eye for three days. Can someone please tell me if this is ok and safe and wont cause a flair in lyme, I guess im worried it will get into my body through my eye and cause me to get sick agian, which may be irrational but ive just heard scary things about steroids~

Are you currently on antibiotics and will you be for a while to come?
Do you have a LLMD?
-----
This seems to be an emergency and if these drops could save your vision, it is important to do this - but with protection from abx (antibiotics).
Still, it's best to call your LLMD's office in case there are other kinds of drops that may work and to be sure you have the proper antibiotic protection.
However, if you are sitting there with a vision emergency, I'd just go for the drops and try to cover your bases the best you can. You cannot afford damage to your eyes but it's hard for us to know just how bad this is.

my eye doc is the best and he's seeing several people with lyme.
he told me something about that steroids for the eyes do not umm, get to be systemic or something like that.
cause i'm having real problems with dryness, itching and redness.
i was so afraid tho that i said no. he suggested eyedrops for chronic dry eyes and i've used those.
i'm just too afraid of steroids...

If you don't do the steroid drops could permanent damage occur?
Do you have a naturopathic doctor? They know of all sorts of other eye drops but, again, if the steroids are required to reduce swelling there may be nothing else that compares.
Can you start on some allicin capsules while you are on the steroid drops and continue the allicin for a month or so? Olive Leaf Extract might help, too, but allicin has a smaller molecular weight and will be more effective in passing through the blood brain barrier.
Andrographis is another option, too.
I am not a doctor and really hate to give advice (no kidding, I do - but so many here don't have doctors). If this were me, for short term, I would take the eye drops and I'd also take allicin capsules.
Many here have used steroid eye drops for things like this and done very well. In some cases, the drops have saved their vision. That is a huge consideration and a vote in favor.

In an absolute jam...and saving our eyesight is very critical...
Steroids, LOCALLY, can be used.
Steroid shots IN HER EYES (x2) saved my sis' eyesight. She had lyme induced uveitis. Her eyesight was saved and in fact, she has needed LESS CORRECTION in her eyeglasses (wasn't a lot to begin with).
Unfortunately, most eye doctors do not know/understand the impact of DHEA eye drops.
Which have to be Rx'd and compounded by a pharmacy in California (Leiter Pharmacy).
If steroids don't work, topical, consider steroid shots OR DHEA eye drops.
Sis said the shots directly into her eyes were NOT as bad as she thought they would be (sounds horrible, I know).

I have to separate this to be able to read it. You said:

The doctor said "said no permanent damage" but that is WITH you adhering to his prescription.
I think you should be fine, then, following your eye doctor's advice. Just my opinion from what I've read. Others will be along soon, to offer advice. (and while correcting this, I see Marnie has stopped by. Great.)

I'm on steroid eye drops and was told to take doxycycline to cover me. That said, was also told that eye drops are not systemic and very little gets in your system compared to taking oral steroids. (I had a llmd tell me the eye drops were ok to take if that helps but did say to take doxy.too) The real problem with steroid eye drops is that if taken for a long time they can cause various eye problems. I've been trying to get off them but can't get inflammation under control any other way but still trying.

I have been to three doctors for this, the first one (a walk in clinic) told me sty and gave me arythamyacin (spelling??) eye ointment then the eye doc told me inflammation and needed predisolone eye drops and doxy then i developed a strep throat stuffed up nose ear infection and er doc said it was a definate eye infection off eye drops and doxy and put me on ceftin, but the predisolone seems to be working so im only taking them 3 times a day one drop with ceftin then when the ceftin is gone i will take the doxy. I have another eye apt tomorrow with an eye doctor who is lyme literate so we will see what the 4th doc says but the throat and ear arent getting better on ceftin im wondering whats going on at this point. Ive been running a fever of only around 101 but ive had chills so bad i just cant get warm..never had this from a 101 temp but i guess its possible. im quit miserable at this point!

My dog is on Prednisolone-acetate, which I assume is what you're talking about? (The same opthalmic drops are used for dogs and people. They are made for people, and then vets rx them off-label.)
I asked the vet. opthomologist if the drops were absorbed systemically, and she said no.
I find it hard to believe that they would not be absorbed systemically AT ALL, but I believe, from what I've read online about them, that if they are absorbed into the system, it's quite minimal. (It does depend on how much/how often you take them.)
Hopefully your doc made you aware that because they are a form of prednisone, if you start them, you have to taper off them slowly. e.g., if you start at 3 drops/day, then you would go down to 2 drops/day for a week, then 1 drop/day, etc.
You can't go on and off pred, in any form, cold turkey.
Good luck. I hope your problem gets solved quickly and fully. It sounds like getting on doxy and taking the drops is probably the right thing to do. Can you make an appt for a phone consult with your former LLMD?
peace, sharon

Hey, everyone. Just a reminder that you'll get more replies if more people can read what is typed.
If paragraphs are short, 3-4 lines (3-6 lines while composing) with 2 space bars between, more people will be able to read and respond. Several posts above swachsler's are just one big sea of swirling grey to my eyes. Many here have neurolyme or inner ear problems and that affects vision and ability to separate blocks of type.
