I had a chat with a Whole Foods staff person about probiotics today.
She said when you are on long term antibiotics, you need a probiotic that is enteric coated.
She said this is because you don't want it to get digested in your stomach, you want it to dissolve in your small intestine where it will do the most good.
Does this sound right?

It probably depends on the particular probiotic - some can survive in the stomach, some can not.
VSL#3 DS has clinical studies showing effectiveness, and it is not enteric coated, so at least in that case it works.

that is why it is good to vary the probiotics.
for example:
vsl is VERY good and contains 8 strains and 450 BILLION active cultures. it actually colonizes in the intestinal track and you are supposed to take it with food. it does need refrigeration because it contains live cultures
on the other hand:
theralac has only 20 billion cultures and 5 strains.
so there is a big difference
