Is it typical for the symptoms of lyme to wax and wane.. come and go? If so why does it do this?

Somedays I'll feel halfway normal (with minor symptoms) and can function pretty well. But then other days I feel horrible and can't do anything.

Also my symptoms fluctuate often and are always changing. Some symptoms I had at the beginning of my illness are gone, some have stayed and some are new. It's always changing. No rhyme or reason.

What is up with this? Is this how lyme presents?

Thanks.

I forgot to say I'm not on any medication or abx that could be causing the symptoms or causing a herx...

Yes, even on abx my symptoms come and go, some leave and others come.

It's ridiculous.

Today every last one of my symptoms is gone, except my visual problems, which are 10x as bad as usual.

i can't tell if it's Lyme-related or if it's something totally unrelated taht I need to get checked (again).

No, there's no rhyme or reason to it, and it's really frustrating.

What you described is typical lyme disease. I don't know why lyme is like that.

Because of this, people with lyme disease can never make plans. They never know what the next day will bring, or even the next hour.

Also, this feature of lyme disease makes people think the person with lyme disease can't really have a medical illness. So, they begin to think of them as hypochondriacs or mental cases, or lazy, etc. Doctors think that too since regular doctors know basically nothing about lyme disease (but think they know everything about it).

One of the reasons is that the spirochete has the ability to go dormant. In addition, the reproductive cycle of the spirochete, could also contribute to the up and down cycle.

Yeah, I just finished working a school year, and relapsed again 3 days ago. I also relapsed in January and had to take a few weeks off. I've been treated for over 18 months.

Go figure.

Yeah- my symptoms really came and went too. For the first year and a half, I would have periods of a couple months where I would feel fine, and then everything would come back. In the last 8 months to a year, it's been more constant, but the severity fluxes a lot.

This weekend, after all but my visual symptoms disappeared, I came down with either a cold (my kids are both sick with themm too) or a sinus infection.

I wonder why my symptoms go away right before I come down with something?

A lot of folk track their sensations. There was a spreadsheet discussed on the board a few weeks back.

Over the course of months and years a good log can help to find some pieces of the puzzle we call Lyme and Co. While it is hard to tell if you feel like crap because you could be getting sicker, getting better (herxing) or reacting to the meds; patterns do develop (or did for me) over time.

For me I do not care so much as why the patterns develop, but that when I see the doctor I can provide information to inform the development of a treatment plan.

Good idea jmb. I was just thinking I need to do that.

My symptoms have done the same thing. Hard to follow. In the first years I had long episodes of seeming normalcy. As years went on, my symptom list grew so much that there is always something wrong - it just varies as to what.

Are you going to go on abx? Or some other treatment?

I was enjoying a temporary remission functioning about 85%. I just relapsed again last week and I'm so discouraged. This disease sucks!

I wish I could be disciplined enough to keep symptom logs.

I keep them for a while, or when I start having new or weird symptoms, then I forget, especially when I feel better.

I guess I can say that my ADD is NOT getting any better.
