I just started my gluten-free diet four days ago and I feel wonderful. I had no idea I could feel so free, unfettered and happy. And all of this despite my Lyme, Babs and Bart!
But, I have developed constipation and I am wondering if anyone knows if this is a normal response to such a drastic eating change and when I can expect to see some improvement.
Unfortunately, prior to finding out I needed to go gluten-free I had been plagued for years with diarreha.
Thanks!

That's wonderful you feel better. I sure wish these 10 months of G/F D/F yielded anything but hassle with me. I would guess the constipation reaction isn't all so unusual.
I seem like the one person who a G/F D/F diet failed miserably. What's new?

Leelee- I was on the gluten free diet for 13 days (I think) and I started getting constipation also. I never had a problem ever in my life with that.
I was reading the packages of the stuff I had bought which was gluten free and there is hardly any fiber in most of the products I had bought. I am use to eating alot of fiber.
So I started eating alot of salads and fresh fruit and it helped out alot. I do think it has something to do with the drastic eating changes. I know for the first week I actually felt worse not eating wheat etc...
So maybe adding extra roughage in the forms of salads, fruit and vegetables would help. Good luck and I am happy to hear you already are feeling a difference.

Thank you, Kim.
I will try adding more fruits and veggies. It should be a bit easier this time of year with all the fresh produce available.

Flax seed meal with lots of water will also do the trick. Of course, LOTS and LOTS of bright colored veggies and a few dark berries are best.
Quinoa ("keen-wa") is also a wonderful non-gluten whole grain with a high amino acid content.

I make a drink everynight of Magnesium-its called Calm-you can get it at healthfood store. It helps to loosen things up.
