I am just going to start Biaxin XL, 500mg but what I wanted to do was just split the pill in half for the first dose just to see how I react to it.

I understand that by cutting it in half you break the extended release mechanism but I'm not aware of there being a smaller dose than 250mg of the immediate release form anyways so it's not like I'll be overdosing on it...

I just want to take a smaller dosage so that if I do react badly to it it can leave my system quicker + I won't have taken the full dose.

Do you guys think it is OK to do this for the first dosage just to 'test the waters out' so to speak?

Thanks!

No! It's timed released. It needs to be taken as prescribed in order for it to be effective. Otherwise the bad guys will be able to become resistant to it rather quickly.

Everything should in theory be taken as prescribed. But, if you are prone to getting really bad side effects or allergic reactions, I think it would be much safer to take a partial instead just to test it out.

Because of bad reactions in the past I try to do things like this (for a twice a day med). 1/4 the smallest pill the first day. If that works then 1/4 twice the next day. Then 1/2 twice the next day, then 1 twice the next day.
