Why is it so many of us have sleep issues with these infections?

For over a year, my sleep was good with this disease and now it has taken a plunge. We were on vacation recently and I slept like a baby, 8-10 hours a night.

After returning my slep slowly went from 8 down to 4-5 hours a night and I am the type who must have 7-8 to function.

I can barely function now and it is getting worse. I know you can't get better without proper sleep.

I am trying over the counter sleep aides but nothing helps. I feel no effect from something like Tylenol PM.

I hate to think I might need a prescription sleeping pill. I have been great on my own. [Frown]

Does anyone know what would be considered prescription strength for Tyl. PM? I am guessing three to four pills.

Do NOT take that much Tylenol PM...it is bad for your liver and taking more than the package says is overdosing. That is not safe.

Instead, go to CVS and get something like Unisom that is just for sleep and has no acetominophen in it. The Tylenol PM has acetominophen, which is for pain, not sleep, and you don't want too much of that.

Another thing to try is Benedryl, 2-3 pills. Don't know if it can be mixed with Unisom, but ask your doctor.

Or just go to something like Lunesta or Ambien....that would be much safer for your body than OD'ing on Tylenol PM. Elavil also helps some people sleep.

My daughter was just Put on "Topomax" to help with sleep and anxiety issues. This is not a sleep med...it is an anti-seizure med. This did bother me at first, as she has no seizures, but gave it a try.

Respected lyme literate psychiatrist recommended it for lyme induced neuro and hormonal dysfunctions. Says he has seen many people heal other problems with the correct sleep while on Topomax.

This is only being used short term. One month.

Only side effects are weight loss and "thinking difficulty", as it is nicknamed "dopamax". The thinking comes back after you get off it. It is not a permanent damage to your thought processes.
This is why it is only recommended to people who do not need to be"on", as far as speaking engagements or college.

Have seen immediate positive reactions. She sleeps through the night, no groggy side effects, and wakes very rested. Her anxiety has become much lower and manageable, and her depression has lifted, due to the sleep. She is a happy camper!

Also, she only experiences mild word finding problems when speaking...and had that anyway wit the lyme.

She is on the lowest does 25 mg. Was to up it to 75 mg. gradually, but since she has great results on 25, we are keeping it this way for the month.

I usually only do natural things when possible as I know the psych meds and sleep aids can give many other dysregulations to the body that may not be easily corrected. But short therm, I feel ok about this, especially with her sleep, and her body feeling great for a change.

His goal with her is to get her on a natural sleep aid for college. It may not be needed if her body regulates with the sleep.

You may want to investigate this. It does not work for everyone.

Just some thoughts. If it were me, I'd be looking to duplicate whatever conditions allowed me to sleep so much better away from home. Also, were there other physical differences besides better sleep? I'd make a list and try to puzzle it together as to why the change when away from home.

Have you checked all home environment possibilities? Do you have mold in your home? How is the air quality? Any chemicals that might bother you? How about EMF's? Any towers around your house? Look for anything and everything that might be disruptive to sleep. Maybe even consider changing the location of your bed.

It could be that you slept better because vacation is less stressful so maybe stress is an issue?

My thoughts exactly Terry. Richedie, I slept wonderfully all winter in my Florida home, my first 2 weeks back in my Michigan home I slept well.

However, sleep is a struggle now after 2 weeks. I did a mold test in my bedroom and sure enough mold grew, haven't had it analyzed yet, so don't know if it is the bad kind. My house is up in the trees on the upper level, my lower level, underground, where I expected mold, had none.

Mold can affect sleep.

Also, Hoosiers has good advice, stay away from the Tylenol PM. The ingredient in it that induces sleep is the same as benadryl, try that instead and save your liver.

It stinks when quality and quantity of sleep is bad, hope you find a solution. Have you had a sleep study?

Insomnia is one of the most frustrating things I have ever encountered!

I am distraught lately over my lack of sleep. I have spent the last 3 years not sleeping. I have tried several things and it is almost like I get an opposite effect on everything I try.

I can sleep about 3 or 4 hours straight after taking a xanax, then after that I lay awake for 2 hours, then I doze....sleep, wake, sleep, wake for another couple of hours. No quality sleep at all.

I really feel that lack of sleep is the reason I have not improved during a whole year of treatment. The ILADS does list sleep deprivation as one of the 3 reasons for treatment failure.

Sutherngrl,

Have you had a sleep study? I never thought that they would find anything when I had one. But guess what?

Being fitted for a CPAP on the 17th.

Did you know that interrupted sleep can be the cause of depression, weepiness, irritability, headaches?

Not to mention that good quality of sleep is needed for healing as you mention.

At first I was bummed about the need for a CPAP but now I am hopeful that it might bring about quality sleep and the remediation of the above listed symptoms.

I think everyone that suffers from fatigue and insomnia would benefit from a sleep study. In some cases it could save lives.

My CVS does not carry Unisom but I picked picked Sominex? I really think the big difference in sleep is stress.

I can't shut my mind off at hmoe and when I wake up early morning and need to get back to sleep, I can't. At the beach, I was going to bed earlier and even if I awoke, I went right back to sleep.

A big help was the dark room! Thick curtains! At home we have office style blinds and light wakes me up even if it is 5 am! I am trying to go to bed earlier, turn off my mind, less stress and get heavy curtains.

When I get to bed earlier I tend to sleep better.
Weird thing is, I fall asleep...but wake up a lot to use the restroom and sometimes can't get back to sleep.

I might be OK if I can get in bed by 10 pm. We don't need to be up in the morning till about 7:30 but I keep waking around 5-6 am. I am a mess on 6 hours or less. I have to set quiet time or relaxing time aside before bed.

when at home, I tend to play a lot of guitar before bed, so I end up with music on the brain like a broken record in my head.

Hi, Richedie--I could not agree more with Hoosiers51! She is absolutely correct about the tylenol. Just now it is coming out about the dangers of tylenol (acetominophen). They are even now considering not having the extra strenght (500mg) each but only having the 325mg. Just saw this last week on one of the news channels that people are taking tylenol for their flu/colds and then they take an over the counter flu/cold medicine (which already has tylenol in it)-but they don't read the ingredients and they are double dosing and sometimes triple dosing themselves! They also had a lady on the news who had been taking tyleno for the last 20 years for arthritis with her doctors' approval and now she has horrible liver issues.

I also had insomnia for a few years with my lyme and I just had to try different kinds of sleeping pills-(from my dr. of course) until I found the best one for me. I take 3mg of lunesta with 10mg of generic flexeril and have never slept better!!! [Smile] [Smile]

Please talk with your dr. and try some good sleeping meds until [Smile] you find the one that helps you best. I have no doubt that you will find it! [Smile]

--------------------
I'm sorry but I am no longer accepting any private messages due to my own battle with lyme.

Have you ever tried Tylenol Simply Sleep, it's just a sleeping pill. I use it and it really works for me. I don't use it every night though but when I do, I get some rest at least.

B6 is needed to convert glutamate to GABA.

GABA levels impact sleep.

"Google" both...B6 and sleep and GABA and sleep.

The interplay of the hormones, the nutrients, the neurotransmitters is sooooooooo complex.

Acetylcholine levels are too low. Kiss REM sleep "goodbye".

Not good.

Serotonin -> melatonin (NREM) is usually upregulated...which is why during the day, most are "tired". Melatonin is a powerful anti-oxidant which is important when glutathione is missing...it is...

B6 must be sublingual because our stong stomach acids will destroy it.

"Magnesium for Autoimmune" by Italian doctor named Valletta = Mg Pyrophosphate (PPi) and sub (lingual B6).

He cured many diseases in MONTHS using "nutrients".

He was able to do so by jumpstarting the process with IV doses of Mg...

So do you suggest a lot of these nutrients sublingual? You can also get this from your food if you diet is exceptional.

I eat tons of veggies and fruit plus plenty of other good food. I believe the body knows best when taking in nutrients so I rely on food. H

However, since getting sick, I have been taking supplements but my docotr never specified they must be sublingual.

I could see if I could find a B6 or even a B complex sublingual, plus a magnesium sublingual.

I used Sominex last night and slept well. Maybe it was just an adjustment after returning from vacation.
