How many people have had their appendix taken out while having Lyme? Is there an association with Lyme and appendicitis?
My brother (who also has Lyme) just had surgery for this today after being up all night in pain. He's away at college in CT.
So my mom (who also has Lyme) had to drive from Ohio to CT today. I couldn't go because we are leaving in a few days to go to WI for an LLMD appt for myself and my 2 boys. Oh what a mess!
So he is doing ok other then pain that isn't touched my morphine
I also wonder if this will make his Lyme worse? I know I started to get really symptomatic after my c-section.
Any input would be helpful! Thanks!

hi amy,
i had my appendix removed when they took a colon polyp at end of my colon.
i've had chronic lyme 39.5 yrs. ... so yes lyme/appendix at same time.
i've had 14 surgeries; each time i've been operated on i have complications and LONGER recuperation time.
spirochete just have time to travel farther every time we are opened up in MY NON-MEDICAL OPINION and all my surgeries.
if your brother is athletic, have him take it really EASY to allow it to heal and do exercises they instruct him to do ok.
best wishes to your entire lyme family! hug/kisses

Had Lyme since 2000, and had my appendix out December, 2007. I am sure that there is a link!

I have not had my appendix removed, but this certainly is a curious subject.
I am interested in reading what other have to say about the connection too.

I'm so sorry your brother is going through this, I hope that he is OK!

Yeah I was just curious because I read that it could be caused from inflamation from an infection. Since Lyme causes inflamation and is a bacteria I figured it could be linked.
My mom had hers out too. She also has Lyme. Gosh, hope I am not next! Of course it would be worse if it were my kids.
Well he is doing ok today. They are staying at a hotel until they get clearance to travel.
Tracy was ever so kind to offer them to stay with her But Kyle's dad would not do that. He's a grumpy old man, as Kyle would say. LOL

They have discovered that the Appendix is where the good bacteria in our gut grow. It is probably why it is so prone to infection - it has the perfect conditions for bacteria to grow.
That suggests to me that anybody getting their appendix out wants to be super diligent about taking probiotics.

My appendex was removed in 1996--the gallbladder in 1987. I'm the only one in my immediate family, with Lyme, and the only one who had these surgeries.

Appendectomy with partial colectomy June '05. Taking antibiotics for Lyme at the time. Dx with Lyme '04, sick since tickbite in '01. Appendix adhered to colon so lost part of that.
Very sick for quite some time. Took a year to recover.
