My already imune compromised 2 year old son developed an EM rash this morning. I called the doc and went in and of course they agreed that its Lyme.

BUT The weird thing is, it is TERRIBLY swollen and looks infected. But it does have the typical red center, then white, then red again.... So Can it swell??? I always thought it stayed flush to the skin???????

They gave him Amox. 3x/day for 21 days.... enough?????

erica, on no .... hugs/kisses

NOT long enough in my opinion. go to top of medical and print off my DOSAGES/MEDS FOR KIDS/ADULTS post

that is directly from our no. 1 chronic llmd, dr. burrascano !! read thru his entire guideliens as well ok.

if you get no answers on swelling go to www.ilads.org and use their CONACT US and ask question there; they get back to me on any question i have ever sent there WITHIN THE DAY!!

best wishes for him and you [Smile] hugs

Thanks so much Betty. I will do all you say! Ia really appreciate your advice.. I'm pretty nervous about this right now, because of his past history.

From p. 7 of Burrascano guidelines:

"It is an erythematous, centrifugally expanding lesion that is raised and may be warm. Rarely there is mild stinging or pruritus. Some lesions have an atypical appearance and skin biopsy specimens may be helpful. When an ulcerated or vesicular center is seen, this may represent a mixed infection, involving other organisms besides B. burgdorferi."

Notice, he says the lesion is "raised." Mine was raised like a hive, and very itchy. That is the same as swollen, I assume.

If the center looks like a blister or ulcer, that could mean coinfections, per Dr. B.

Absolutely they can swell, itch and burn; and that is NOT enough medication.

Good Morning all

Thanks for the responses. He woke up this AM with ANOTHER one on the back of his right leg! Is this bad??????? That one also is swollen.

He has had 2 doses so far of amox. I will call doc anyway and talk to them about the length of time he's on it, but I'm really worried now that he has another one!

Would you consider making an appointment with the world's pre-eminent pediatric lyme doc in New Haven, Connecticut?

Even if the appt is 6 months from now, I would feel better as a mom if I knew I had it. At this point, you don't know if you will need that appt or not. So, I think it could be wise to make it now, to cover all your bases.

I doubt a regular pediatrician knows enough about lyme to treat it the way a lyme doc would. This way, if you get him treated by Dr. J. you would have more peace of mind.

I understand Dr. J will not treat kids unless they have symptoms. So, if your little one has symptoms (I hope not) by the date of the appt, then go. If not, you could call and see what they say you should do.

I know I broke out in a number of small red rashes years ago. It probably was the start of my lyme disease. The rashes were about the size of a nickel.

I had 13 of them total on my legs. They took a few days for all of them to show up.

Are your son's rashes small like this, or larger?

Hi TF,

Yes I would consider contacting Dr J. My 6 year old had this exact same thing happen to her last year as well, so I would love it if he would see them both. I will make that call. [Smile]

My kids pedi is a Lyme skeptic. She believes when the rash is there and its early and has been treated it cannot go Chronic. She even tells me that I can't have CLD because I must have taken abx before.... I do have CLD and am treating, and seeing LLMD in Falmouth.

ANyway his rashes were all different in sizes. The first one from yesterday was about the size of a half dollar on his forearm and extremely swollen... Looked like a tumor hanging of his arm. It had the typical bullseye look.

The two that developed today one was on his left elbow and was only about the size of a penny, and the other was on the back of his right leg and was about the size of a quarter almost half dollar and that one is extremely swollen as well..

Being that I have Lyme Disease I have done some research and have had lots of help here too, but I am overly concerned with him due to his past medical history... (which is VERY extensive!) So when he gets ANYTHING I panic, you know?? [Frown]

Thanks to all for advice and help, and if anything else is thought of pleasekeep it coming. I can't express how grateful for all of you I am. [Smile]

Yes, these poor non-lyme literate doctors. I had one tell me that my friend could not have lyme because she has taken antibiotics in the past.

They are taught that lyme is so easily cured, any med for any short period of time will do it.

Too bad. The friend's lyme test (from Quest or LabCorp) came back positive. What do you know!

That's why we are all so blessed that Dr. J is still around. May the Lord allow him to live a long time for our sakes.

Has anyone ever seen a rash like the one I posted under "strange looking blotch"? I figured you might be able to give me some input since you have all been dealing with multiple rashes.
