I have been symptom free for about a year now, but I just found out that my neighbor had/has Lyme. He was treated for 3 months, not on abx anymore, and has recently developed a severe allergy to flour products. He's gone to the ER 3 times for treatment of anaphylactic shock.
Do you think this means the Lyme isn't gone? How about a co-infection? Will it go away after treatment is successful?
He hasn't been to an LLMD yet (if I'd known sooner, I would have recommended mine), so I'll give him my doc's name.
I appreciate anyone's thoughts. This board has always been the most informative place to go for me.
Thanks. Cara

First, congratulations to you!!
As far as I can tell, once infected, always infected. Then it is a matter of keeping the immune system in good shape so that the infection does not get the upper hand.
As far as your neighbor, it would be very hard to make any conclusions about the state of his infection based on just the development of an allergy.
I can understand why you would be concerned since immune system issues are so common with lyme and allergies are part and parcel of that.
He could have damaged his gut when he was treating lyme - this could have damaged his immune system since 80% of the immune system is the gut. Abx can cause a leaky gut which in turn could have caused a wheat allergy or food allergies in general. He could have a hereditary propensity to wheat allergies. Perhaps his gut flora is out of balance. So many possibilities.
I don't know when he was sick, how long he was sick, if he was evaluated for co-infections, if his treatment was adequate etc. etc. etc....
With this limited info, I would suggest that he pay attention to his gut now. Heal it, rebalance the flora, attend to food allergies etc..
Then, keep a very close eye on his immune system and if he notes a decline in health, seek out an LLMD ASAP.
So good of you to be concerned about him. Best wishes to you both.
