A recent study shows that Red Yeast Rice is an effective alternative to the Statin cholesterol lowering drugs. Red Yeast Rice also has the added benefit of being much cheaper and safer than the Statin drugs as well.
I wonder if Red Yeast Rice will now be routinely prescribed by medical doctors for the treatment of high cholesterol? And I also wonder if Red Yeast Rice will be covered under president Obama's health care plan or a private health insurance plan?
I am guessing the answer to my questions above is -- not likely.

I was just prescribed Red Yeast Rice by my cardiologist. I'm actually starting it today...I'll report back when I have my cholesterol checked again.
I was able to get my total cholesterol down 30 points through diet alone, but my "bad" cholesterol didn't budge...supposedly, Red Yeast Rice is supposed to lower the LDL.

SoSublyme,
That's great that your cardiologist knew about the Red Yeast Rice.
Also, to maximize your chances of lowering your cholesterol with the Red Yeast Rice you might want to take at least 1,800mg of the Red Yeast Rice per day. 1,800mg was the dosage used in the study above. And you might also want to have your cholesterol particle size checked. The bigger the better.
But personally I don't worry to much about high blood cholesterol. However, I would worry about what causes the cholesterol to become elevated.
For example exposure to fungus/mold and mycotoxins may increase blood cholesterol levels.

Between that and fish oil, my husband dropped his cholesterol by 100 points in 3 months!!!!
( hubby takes 1200mg of red yeast rice per day )

New studies/reports on Niacin also having a dramatic effect on cholesterol.
A friend of mine was using Niacin for a very short period and he now does not use any more statins whatsoever.
His doctor was actually amazed at the results after 3 months and is going to document his treatment.

Niacin (nicotinic acid) will also decrease the cholesterol particle NUMBER by increasing the cholesterol particle size.
And that is a good thing.
When it comes to cholesterol particle size, bigger is better.
"Large particle size seems to give people an extra 20 years of life, with very little disability to go along with it," said Dr. Nir Barzilai, who directed the study at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx."

So, if the statins make me achey and feel awful, would the red yeast also have a similar side effect?

i would check with your doctor first, but i think the negative side effects such as joint pain are what drives people to alternative cholesterol help.
my husband suffers from shin pain, and we think its a side effect from the statins. he has some 3-4 blockages, (minor) but need to be monitored.
his heart doc says he may let him switch to niacin in a few months.

Wow I'm interested.
What about interactions with the host of other meds we're on?
Does it need to be taken away from our other medications?
Do you remember whether chlorella has to be taken away from other meds, like cholesteramine (sp)?
I'd like to soon address all the bacterial detritus that has been aggravating my body into producing cholesterol....

I thought they've known this for a long time, but the FDA had it banned in the U.S.
